Ludex Gundyr is the first boss of Dark Souls 3, the closest thing you are going to get to a tutorial boss fight in the game. That being said, the first time I went up against him he still killed me half a dozen times at least.Do not underestimate this 'tutorial' boss. Welcome to Dark Souls.
Step 1) Defeat his first form.
He doesn't look like much to start off with, so walk up to him and yank that sword out of his chest. Trust me, you'll be fine. What's the worst that can happen? As he comes to life, start laying into him, it takes him a little bit to get to his fight and get ready for you, so a few quick strikes while he's doing that never hurts. If you have a shield with 100% physical absorption for this fight, it will make it a lot easier as all of his attacks are physical and you can block them all. If not... well, keep moving and sneak in to strike just after he has swung at you. Once you get him to half health, he will morph.
Step 2)Stay close!
Suddenly, he looks a lot more intimidating now. Don't back off just because of that though, stay in his face. He'll have a harder time laying into you when you are up close, but if you back off he has quite the range on him now, he'll still come after you.
Step 3)Dodge his jump attack
During the fight in this stage he is going to jump into the air, wait for it, and roll to the side before he lands. This will give you the chance to get a few swings in on him before you have to worry about him attacking again. Repeat this as required and you'll wear him down for the victory.
Congratulations, you've defeated the first of the Cinder Lords. That wasn't so bad, right? Well, brace yourself, it only gets harder from here. Light the bonfire and venture into the shrine to continue on your quest.
