Fast startup combines a standard system start and hibernation to create a hybrid boot that gets you from zero to desktop in the shortest time. It uses the hibernate function familiar to users of Windows 7 and 8 and writes an image of the current state to file. This file is read at boot to speed up system loading. It’s a useful way to save time when using your computer, so if you want to turn fast startup on or off in Windows 10, here’s how to do it.

Make sure hibernation is turned on
To work properly, fast startup depends on hibernate mode. It should be enabled by default in Windows 10, but let’s make sure.

1. Open a CMD window as an administrator.
2. Type or paste ‘powercfg -h on’.

This will enable hibernate if disabled and do nothing if already enabled.

3. Under Shut-down settings, check the box next to Turn on fast startup and then Save.

2. Select ‘Choose what the power buttons do’ and then ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable’.
