If you use Windows Defender as your primary malware protection, it isn’t necessarily a good idea to hide notifications. However, if it is only part of your security solution or becomes annoying, hiding notifications is better than turning it off altogether. Here’s how to hide or show the Windows Defender notification area icon in Windows 10.

To hide the Windows Defender notification area icon, follow these steps.

1. Open Settings and navigate to System, Notifications & actions.
2. Select the text link ‘Select which icons appear in the taskbar’ in the right pane.
3. Select Windows Defender User Interface Light and click the selector to off.

To show the Windows Defender notification area icon, you just reverse the steps above.

1. Open Settings and navigate to System, Notifications & actions.
2. Select the text link ‘Select which icons appear in the taskbar’ in the right pane.
3. Select Windows Defender User Interface Light and click the selector to on.

You can also stop Windows Defender User Interface Light from booting up which will have much the same effect. It won’t affect boot time much but it will stop notifications.

1. Right click the Taskbar and select Task Manager.
2. Select the Start-up tab and find ‘Windows Defender User Interface Light’.
3. Set the Status to Disabled to prevent it booting with Windows.
