One of the benefits of a cross platform operating system is the ability to let them cooperate to make your life a little easier. One such trick is sending an SMS from your desktop. It then automatically communicates with a connected Windows 10 phone to send and receive messages. It’s a neat trick and one I use daily. If you want to send SMS text messages from the Messaging app in Windows 10, here’s how.

You will need a Windows 10 PC and a Windows 10 phone for this to work.

Enable Messaging Everywhere in Windows 10
First we need to enable Messaging Everywhere on both the phone and your PC.

On the phone:
1. Open up the Messaging app and select the three dots at the bottom, then Settings.
2. Switch ‘Send texts on all my Windows devices’ to on.
3. Set ‘Download messages through’ to Any time.

On the computer:
1. Open up the Messaging app on the PC and select the three dots at the bottom, then Settings.
2. Switch ‘Send texts from here and sync texting history…’ to on.
3. Set ‘Download messages through’ to Any time.
4. Set ‘Send messages through’ to your phone account.

Once set up, sending an SMS from the Windows 10 desktop is simple.

1. Open up the Messaging app.
2. Select the ‘+’ sign to create a new SMS message.
3. Search or select a contact to send the message to.
4. Type your message in the box in the bottom right and add an emoticon by clicking the smiley if you really need to.
5. Click on the arrow next to the smiley to send the SMS.

You can also reply directly to SMS messages received on your computer by selecting them in the Notification area or from within the Messaging app.
