Hibernate is a type of sleep mode that writes the current state of the machine to disk rather than holding it in memory. It is slightly slower to boot than sleep but doesn’t draw power and isn’t susceptible to power loss. If you would like to enable Hibernate Mode In Windows 10, here’s how.

The downside to Hibernate Mode is that it takes up hard drive space. The default configuration creates a file somewhere between 60-75% of the size of your RAM. So if you have 16GB of RAM, your hiberfile.sys would be up to 12GB in size. That’s a lot of disk to lose, especially if you use an SSD. The upside is that portable device users won’t keep losing battery in sleep mode and get a faster boot than if the system were shut down.

Enable Hibernate Mode In Windows 10
It is quite straightforward to enable hibernate mode in Windows 10.

1. Open a CMD window as an administrator.
2. Type or paste ‘powercfg -h on’.
3. Navigate to Control Panel, System and Security, Power Options.
4. Select ‘Choose what the power buttons do’ and ensure Hibernate is ticked under Shut-down settings.

If you’re using a desktop, that’s all you need to do. If you’re using a mobile device, there are a couple more steps.

5. Navigate back to Control Panel, System and Security, Power Options.
6. Select the ‘Change plan settings’ text link next to the active power plan.
7. Select ‘the ‘Change advanced power settings’ text link.
8. Set Battery to Hibernate for Critical battery action and Low battery action if they have not already been modified by the system.
