Windows Updates have been the bane of our existence ever since Windows XP. They download automatically, don’t always work and can automatically restart your computer even if you’re in the middle of something important. Often especially when you’re in the middle of something important. If you want to disable updates in Windows 10, here’s how you do it.

I would never suggest disabling updates altogether as they can contain essential fixes and security updates. I will show you how to disable updates in Windows 10, but also how to assert a little more control without turning them off altogether.

Disable updates in Windows 10
Disabling updates in Windows 10 isn’t easy as Microsoft wants to reach as many computers as possible. So do this:

1. Right click the Taskbar, select Task Manager, Services and Open Services at the bottom.
2. Find the Windows Update service, right click and select Disable.
3. Then click Stop to stop the service right away.

Rather than disabling Windows Update, we can tame it a little.

Take control of Windows Updates
I think it is better to bend Windows Update to our will and control how it behaves rather than disabling it altogether.

1. Navigate to Settings, Update and Security.
2. Select the Advanced Options text link.
3. Select ‘Notify to schedule restart’ to stop Windows automatically rebooting whenever it feels like it.
4. Select ‘Defer upgrades’ to put off downloading updates for a time if you like.
5. Select ‘Choose how updates are delivered’ and you can control how those updates are delivered. If you’re on a network, it might be useful to have this switched on. One computer downloads the update and them makes it available locally so you don’t have to download it separately.
