Zipping a file is to compress them so they take up less space. File compression is useful if you are emailing or copying a file and want to shrink it. It is also useful if you’re running out of disk space and don’t want to delete anything. A file compression utility is built into Windows 10 so you don’t need any third-party tools. If you want to give it a try, here’s how to zip files in Windows 10.

Using the built-in file compression tool within Windows 10 is simple.

1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the file you want to zip.
2. Right click and select ‘Send to’.
3. Select ‘Compressed (zipped) folder’.
4. Name the file if the default doesn’t suit and allow the process to complete.

Or:

1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the file you want to zip.
2. Click the Share menu in Explorer.
3. Select Zip and complete the process.

You can also add files or folders to existing zipped archives by dragging and dropping them into it. You can select multiple files and folders by holding down Ctrl and click on each entity. You can even select a series of files or folders by highlighting the first one, holding down shift and clicking the final one in the series. Then just drag and drop or choose the ‘Send to’ option as above.
