How to Create the Ultimate Mage in Skyrim

Playing a pure mage in Skyrim can be a lot of fun. Forget the armor, forget the weapons, just duel wield spells and blast enemies away before they even get close to you.

Step 1)Pick a race that as an advantage to being a mage.
By the time you get to high levels this won't matter too much, but just starting out as a mage can be rough. Bretons, high elves, or dark elves are all good choices for a bit of a magical boost in the early game. The high elves are one of the better options here, as they will start out with an additional 50 magicka to throw around right off the start, as well as a more diverse range of magical skills.

Step 2)Choose what school of magic you want to specialize in, but don't neglect the others.
A good mage will specialize in one school of magic, but still use the others as well when the situation calls for it, don't focus solely on say destruction, and neglect your restoration. A mage is a very squishy character, you are going to need to be casting additional spells for mage armor and wards against incoming magical damage in order to stand toe to toe with a dragon. If you have spent all of your time leveling your destruction magics, then sure you might be able to annihilate most foes in one blow, but they can do the same to you if they get the drop on you.

Step 3)Familiarize yourself with the favorites menu.
If you stick to just one or two spells for your entire play through of Skyrim, you are going to have a much rougher time than you need to. Learn how to set favorite spells in the menu options of Skyrim so that you can sway between spells easily and quickly during combat. Once you've got the hang of this, the rest of your experience in Skyrim is going to go that much smoother.
