Fix black screen problem after Windows 10 Anniversary Update



I have seen the black screen problem after Windows 10 Anniversary Update myself as it happened to me when upgrading one of my test boxes. Upon loading for the first time, once I logged in, the usual ‘Hi, let’s get started’ appeared and then went black. Nothing I did would change it or continue the login. Most frustrating but also easily rectified. Here’s how.

The way I overcame the black screen freeze was to perform a clean boot from Safe Mode. Your mileage may vary but as the alternative is to go through all your drivers and programs looking for incompatibility, it’s a good place to start.

1. Hold down the Shift key and click the restart button in the Windows menu.
2. Select Troubleshoot when the computer boots.
3. Select Advanced and then Startup Settings.
4. Select Restart.
5. Once your computer has rebooted, press F4 to select Enable Safe Mode.
6. Type or paste ‘msconfig’ into the Search Windows box once you’re in the desktop.
7. Select the Services tab and check the ‘Hide all Microsoft services’ box.
8. Select ‘Disable all’.
9. Select the Startup tab and click ‘Open Task Manager’.
10. Disable all processes set to ‘Enabled’ under Status and close Task Manager.
11. Hit OK in the MSConfig window and reboot.

This initiates a clean boot of Windows 10 and your desktop should load as normal. From here, check Event Viewer for errors, update all your drivers and perform program troubleshooting until you find the incompatible program.

If that doesn’t work, you’ll have to roll back to the previous version of Windows 10.

1. Navigate to Settings, Update & security.
2. Click ‘Get started’ under ‘Go back to an earlier build’.
3. Follow the rollback wizard to return your Windows 10 to vanilla.
