Now with Civilization 6, religion plays a much more important role and it is possible for you to actually achieve a religious victory over the other civilizations you'll be coming up against. This victory can be achieved by having every civilization following your religion as the majority religion, meaning 50% or more of their cities are following it.
Step 1)Found your religion
The first thing you're going to need to do is actually found a religion to push on all the other civilizations out there. To do this, you're going to need to rush to build a holy site, and anything else you can manage in order to get great prophet points. The sooner you found your religion, the sooner you can start spreading it around.
Step 2)Start spreading your Religion
If you managed to get your religion founded before other civilizations near you, start spreading it as soon as you can with missionaries, and later apostles if you are meeting resistance. A missionary can defend itself, but not attack other religious members, while an apostle can do both but is more expensive. Make use of those missionaries as much as you can, and use your apostles to set up new religious benefits. Remember, any town with a holy site that is converted to your religion will cause any apostles or missionaries built there to now be part of your own religion.
Step 3)Don't let your missionaries or apostles die in religious combat.
An time your missionaries or apostles are defeated in combat and destroyed, your religion will take a hit in followers and the victorious religion will see more people converting to them in an area around where the battle took place. Unless you have unlocked the martyr ability, it isn't worth letting your religious figures die. If you do have the martyr ability though, when they die they'll create a relic.
Once you have a strong faith income and can start purchasing apostles en masse to convert enemy civilizations to your religion, you should be able to come out ahead in the race to convert everyone to the one true way. Remember, once you've converted them and removed any existing religious units they have, they have no choice but to continue following your religion, they can't build any religious units that aren't going to help you.
