Replacing a Wi-Fi card in a laptop isn’t as difficult as you might think. It is more involved than changing one on a desktop, but with the right tools and technique and a little patience, it can be done within half an hour. This Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 wireless card replacement guide shows you how to do just that in Dell’s latest laptop.
If anything happens to your wireless card while your Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is under warranty I would always suggest getting Dell to do the work. If it is out of warranty, I would encourage you to get under the hood and try it yourself. Here’s how.
Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 wireless card replacement
The replacement process is a little involved but not technically difficult. Just follow this tutorial and everything will be fine!
1. Follow my guide to removing the base cover on the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1.
2. Look for the wireless card in the top right corner. If the battery is closest to you, the card should be a small rectangle with the Intel logo on it.
3. Unscrew the M1x6.5 screw on the holding bracket securing the wireless card to the chassis.
4. Carefully lift out the card and disconnect the antenna cable.
5. Connect the new wireless card to the antenna cable. The white cable in the white socket and black cable in the black socket.
6. Place the new card in place of the old one.
7. Place the securing bracket over the card and screw back into place.
8. Replace the base cover as directed in the above tutorial.
Once everything is back in place, boot the laptop and test the new wireless card. If it was a like-for-like swap, the existing driver will pick up the card and work as normal. If the replacement was an upgrade or a newer model, check the driver and update as necessary. Remove the old driver first in Device Manager and then install the new one. Don’t overwrite drivers as this can cause configuration issues.
