How To Custom Install Windows 10 After Express Installation

When installing Windows 10 on a PC, Microsoft gives you two options, Express Install or Custom Install.

An Express Install is pre-loaded with defaults while a Custom Install allows you disable some of these defaults depending on your preference. If you have already Express installed Windows 10, and you wish to change this, then you are in luck because all these settings can be configured after installation.

1. Advertising ID settings.

Click on Start.

Select the Settings Button, followed by Privacy Option.

Select General.

Turn off the Switch beneath the Let Apps use Advertising ID.


2. Inking, Speech and Typing Settings.

Click on Start.

Select the Settings Button, followed by Privacy Option .


Select Speech, Inking and Typing


Click on Turn off speech services and typing suggestions.


3. Location Settings

Click on Start.

Select the Settings Button, followed by Privacy Option.


Select Location


Click on Change

Turn off Location for the device.

4. Diagnostic and Data Use Settings.

Click on Start.

Select the Settings Button, followed by Privacy Option.

Select Feedback and Diagnostics ‘scroll if you can’t find it, it is the fourth option from the bottom.


Click on the dropdown menu and choose Never under Feedback Frequency.

Under how much data you send Microsoft, select Basic.


5. Wi-Fi Settings

Click on Start.

Select the Settings Button.

Click on Network and Internet followed by Wi-Fi.

Click Switch beneath the connect to suggested hotspots and turn it off.

Turn off the Switch beneath the Paid Wi-fi Services

6. Page Prediction Settings

Launch Edge

Select More button located at the top corner on the right.

Click Settings

Select View Advanced Settings and Turn Off Use Page Prediction.

7. SmartScreen Filter

Click on Start.
Select the Settings Button, followed by Privacy Option.

Select General.

Turn off the Switch beneath the Turn on SmartScreen Filter .

8. Updates

Click on Start.

Select the Settings Button .

Click on Update and Security, followed by Advanced Options.

Select the Choose how Updates are delivered option and turn it off.

Alternative

If the above seems cumbersome, you can always do a clean install of Windows 10 and instead of choosing Express, choose a Custom install.

You will be redirected to a settings window that will allow you to turn off and on your preferred settings.

Note:

The above settings will allow you to control how much data Microsoft collects for targeted advertisements and some online services like Cortana. It will give you a sense of security that Microsoft is not spying on you.
