Are there tools out there to determine what printers and only printers are
alive on my network?

Some printer scanning tools?

Well, for HP printers with JetDirect cards, there is always HP's Install Network
Printer Wizard. But, in the general case, taking into account all brands of
printers and printer hung onto computers but shared, I think not. JetDirect
cards identify themselves on a network as no more than Ethernet cards, and AFAIK
there is no industry-standard protocol to specifically poll a printer. Some of
the full-of-bells-and-whistles network admin tools may help do so. HP and IBM
sell these. So do others... Ben Myers

It depends upon what print server(s). The software that came with our
2200DTN not only found the one on our LAN, but also another 2200 on our
factory WAN (via VPN).

Some time ago when I got the HP firmware update utility, it found both an
old JetDirect EX Plus, and the n610 on our 2200DTN, and I upgraded both.

I think WebJetAdmin will generally find JetDirect print servers, although,
I do not recall if I had to crank in their IPs. Otherwise port scanning
may help.

Port:
515 lpr/lpd Unix type printing (can be done with WinXP/2k/NT by
configuring a "local" TCP port)
631 ipp printing (like cups in Linux) which can be done from Windows using
network printer with URL like http://server_name_or_ip:631/queuename
9100 and above for JetDirect and additional queues (can be done from
WinXP/2k/NT by configuring a "local" TCP port)
