I have been looking into 802.11a and 802.11b equipment. Are there any resources out there where I can find out what relationship watts output, gain, and distance have with each other. Obviously more watts\gain, more distance, but what kind of equations are there to figure out range based on wattage and gain information?

watts and range are related, but it's not a simple set in stone kind of thing, there are many variables involved. for example usable range depends alot on the transmition and recieving equipment efficiency too. for example different recieving antennae orientation may alter ones reception significantly. Also there are many other factors to consider such as all that is environmental, etc.

When you say gain I guess you must be talking about directive gain, no? the context you have used the word gain in, doesn't make any sense.

All the equations and the ability to apply them require one to get all mucked up in some high level calculus, and physics junk. If that doesn't scare you I could recommend some of the old texts I have lying around. Also generally by the time a person really is able to talk coherent antenna theory they have the basics of circuit theory down very well. I'll warn you it makes for some very dry reading even if you have had all the schooling I mentioned.
