Installing Windows XP Pro

I have a seemingly unresolvable problem with installing Windows XP Pro.

The install progresses OK until an error message "Can't find D:\I386". At
this point there is an invitation to browse for the file but there just is
no option for the D drive that it has been using. On clicking on cancel the
install continues (using the D Drive) but it is not complete. For instance
Search doesn't work.

I have tried several times to install - and have made sure that the CD is
clean.

Typically of computers it doesn't fail shortly after starting. Oh no that
would be too convenient.

Can anyone please throw a light on what may be happening?

Are you reinstalling or upgrading from an earlier Windows version, Bill?

Do you have a retail version of WinXP Pro or is it OEM?

I've had this problem on a PC with a card reader. On first booting to
the CD it is treated as 'D' but on second boot the card reader is
recognised and the drive letters change, unfortunately you can't browse
for the drive.
I just kept trying with different letters, working my way through the
alphabet until P found the drive, unfortunately again, it won't
remember it but once you know where it is you can easily change the
letter.

Installing onto a new hard disk which was formatted / re-formatted by WinXP.

I'm afraid this is not an option. The only drive letter available to browse
at that time was C:
