Only a fool will buy a Granite Bay Motherboard now.
The Granite Bay Intel E7205 Chipset Motherboards will only be useful for around three months.
Why didn't Intel come out with their own Granite Bay Motherboard?
Intel new that the Intel E7205 is geared for the Workstation market and not the Desktop market.
Intel will be coming out in a few months with their new Springdale Chipset which will support up to a 800 FSB, and support high speed DDR RAM such as the PC-3500 DDR RAM and beyond.
The Granite Bay Motherboards such as the ASUS P4G8X only supports up to PC-2700 DDR RAM.
Any faster DDR RAM such as PC-3500 will run as a PC-2700 DDR RAM.
Just wait a few months and get the new SIS Chipset or the Springdale Chipset.
Gee, so nice of you to place this brilliantly insightful comment on so many forums. I guess this way nobody will miss your guidance and wisdom. Perhaps you might want to consider both Proverbs 17:28 and Samuel Clemens derivative quotes. Or maybe Abe Lincoln’s as shown here:
Jonathan, "foolishness" is relative (And I should know- I have a lot of foolish relatives).
If you're in no hurry, then "yes", you should wait. On the other hand, if you feel strongly about buying an Intel chipset, you need a motherboard today, and you really want dual channel DDR, AGP 8X and USB 2.0 and Ultra DMA, then your choices are pretty limited.
---There may be more than one way to do it, but why would anyone want to remove the fur from a feline?---
i am a newbie at this . but if you wait for the latest and greatest then dont you also have to buy a processor that has an 800mhz FSB to take advantage of that? and unless you can spend any kind of money you want- these boards and processors will take a while to go down in price. ??
A fool you say? I understand that a lot of overclockers LOVE this motherboard. Some guys are talking of getting 3D Mark scores of over 18,000 and Sandra memory scores in the 4100's when overclocked. <A HREF="http://www.asusboards.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31583&perpage=15&pagenumber=1" target="_new">http://www.asusboards.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31583&perpage=15&pagenumber=1</A>
And those of us who purchase entry level workstations from the large corporations can now get access to systems that have better memory bandwidth and are cheaper when comparedto the ageing PC800 RDRAM solutions.
I think the reason the board seems odd is it only supports 2100 DDR SDRAM. The scores should be really nice when Intel supports 2700 or better. Hopefully it will beat RDRAM at stock speeds.
<font color=red>The solution may be obvious, but I can't see it for the smoke coming off my processor.</font color=red>
There's a screeny on about the 12th post down on the seventh page <A HREF="http://www.asusboards.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31583&perpage=15&pagenumber=7" target="_new">here</A>. The futuremark result page is <A HREF="http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=5600679" target="_new">here</A>.
So according to JonathanF's logic, all PCs are a piece of crap and we are all fools? Because all CPUs and motherboards will be obsolete in a period of months.
If you are worried about the resale value of your PC, then don't buy one. Spend your money on a diamond or a Rolex, they should be worth almost the same many years from now.

personally i am new at this and i am on a budget. i am going with a 845PE chipset (i guess just before the Granite Bay chipset does this still make me kind of dumb man?)
Gigabyite GA-8PE667 Ultra Mobo
and a P4 2.4ghz 533mhz FSB, Antec Plusview Case, Antec Truepower 430w PS. 512MB DDR Corsair XMS pc2700 DDR ram. everything else i have. and sure i could wait for the new pentiums with 800mhz FSB and you know what; i got all the above for a grand total of about $660 bucks. which in a few months just for the newest fastest p4 processor with HT and 800 mhz FSB would probably cost almost that much. so it all depends how much money you have.
