I don't think any new PS3s support backwards compatability, at least in the UK they don't. I know that the original 60GB versions supported limited backwards compatability but i'm pretty sure the new ones removed that feature.
If it's the 80GB MGS4 PS3 then it should be able to play those titles, however the new 80GB that only has 2 USB ports and is literally just the old 40GB with a larger hard drive, can only play PS1 and PS3 titles.
i got the new 80gb and its played anything i've put in it. although its annoying that the ps2 games dont render at a higher resolution. So i end up w\ 6-8'' on each side of the game on my tv screen.
20GB and 60GB (NTSC): fully backward compatable.
60GB (PAL) and 80GB (NTSC): Software Emulation.
40GB, 160GB: No backward compatability.
80GB (new, 2 USB ports): ???
The new 80GB isn't supposed to support PS2 games, but it does for me as well. Wikipedia also states the new 80GB shouldn't be able to...Either way, MGS2/3 are supported on all PS3's except the ones the explicitly don't allow PS2 games to run.
