Just putting together an "economical" system for my mother-in-law. Price is a concern, but I would rather pay a little extra and get the best part for the money (best bang for the buck), and this has to be a ROCK-SOLID system, or I'll be there all the time supporting it. I am pretty happy with the following configuration, but I wanted to run it by the THG forum since you have never steered me wrong before. Anyway, here is what I think I am going to get:
VGA ASUS|V9280TD GF4 Ti4200 8X 64M 1 $126.99
CPU P4/2.4BGHz 533M 478PIN/512K RTL 1 $191.00
DDRAM 512M|PC-2700 DDR333 -SAMSUNG% 1 $103.50
HD 40GB|SEAGATE ST340016A % 1 $78.00
MB ASUS P4S533/PA/LAN-UAYZ RET 1 $97.99
FD 1.44MB|ALPS DF354H068F BEIGE OEM 1 $12.00
CD-ROM 52X ASUS CD-S520 RETAIL 1 $28.00
CASE ENERMAX|10BMDATX CS-A102USB RT 1 $54.00
She already has a 20" Hitachi, KB, Mouse and I'll provide the S/W. Her system is mainly intended for Internet and Office. I know I could have saved about $120 by going with a slower CPU, less RAM, and a crappy GPU, but I'd rather get SOLID parts. Anyway, anyone see any problems that I am unwittingly bringing upon myself (or her)? As always, thanks for the advice. For $700, this is a really kick-a$$ system and I am pretty jealous (I hope she remembers this when my bithday rolls around). Thanks again.
Does your mom play Counterstrike or something? Seriously dude, GET REAL! The TI4200 isn't any more stable than a GeForce2 MX! You threw away money, but hey, it's your money!
OK, that's a stable board. You put toether way more system than she needed though. I would have probably gotten something with the Intel GX chipset (integrated Intel graphics, which are super stable) and a slower CPU.
SOLID? LMAO@U over the Ti4200. But it should at least be as stable as it would be with say, a TNT2 M64!
There are no stupid questions, only stupid people doling out faulty information based upon rumors, myths, and poor logic!
Yeah, I knew the Ti4200 was a "bit of" overkill, but over the course of 3 years, the additional $80 isn't a big deal. I thought about integrated componenets, and even did get the integrated NIC and Audio, but that was all I could do...the video would have put me over the edge. Plus, she does have me, kids, and grand kids, so the potential is there for some gaming on this system. $700 bucks for a hassle-free, solid, and fast system isn't a big deal. As long as there aren't any known incompatibilities, we'll all be happy. As for my mom-in-law gaming, she would never touch something like CounterStrike.....she's a UT2003 addict ! Thanks for the input though.
