I've managed to sell off my dell so being restrained by parts from it is not longer an issue. So.....I'd like to build the most badass system I can with $800.
1. I already have a Geforce 4 TI4400 so I won't need another video card.
2.I don't need more than a 40gig hard drive but I want it to be fast.
Suggest away!
And thanks to everyone who has been kind enough to help me out these past few days. I appreciate it.
You still need a case and p/s
Try not to go cheap on the power supply Enermax products are worth the extra money and for case well I would look around and spend any money left over from the mainboard, cpu and ram.
Also you may want to consider if you need to buy a keyboard, mouse, monitor?
Most mainboards come with intergrated sound so it saves money and isn't bad quality either.
PCMCIA Really stands for (People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms)
I'd go with Spitfire's board recommendation but add that you could easily afford a faster CPU than the one he recommended.

I'd like to toss my hard drive recommandation in for the Western Digital WD800JB (8MB cache) on sale for $109 free shipping at newegg. You can't beat that deal. I agree with the A7N8X deluxe and the Corsair PC3200 twin sticks
It's always the one thing you never suspected.
good rec's
I will add some input...
I would def go for a mobo with the nforce2 chipset like these guys have suggested..but I do opt for the Epox 8RDA+ because of its overclocking potential..
The ram suggested is good, I would go with the western digital 8mb cache harddrive as suggested by the previous poster
I was looking into some Athlon processors and I realized that I know NOTHING about them. I don't even know what the model numbers mean. But I'm right in assuming 2100 means 2.1 ghz correct?
And the board recommended (Asus Motherboard for AMD Athlon/XP/Duron Processors, Model# A7N8X Deluxe Retail) says:
"CPU Supported: Socket A AMD Athlon/XP/Duron (support AMD XP2800)"
Does this mean that it supports Athlon processors up to 2.8ghz?
Edited by Doc_Holliday on 02/04/03 03:30 PM.

Is this the correct ram?
The Other brand mentioned was quite a bit more expensive so do you think it's worth it?
Also, Is there any special brand of PSU I should buy for the Athlon as I've noticed some are "Athlon approved" Will 300 watts be enough or will I need 350?
They are color coded so you'll be able to tell easier what pair of slots to use for dual channel capability.

AXP 2100+ is as fast as P4 2.2 GHz (w/PC800 RDRAM).
AMD PR ratings are based on P4 w/ RDRAM performance. If you pair P4 with DDR, then P4 performs bad enough to beat an AXP of equilvent PR Rating. See Tom's VGA Chart: Part 1 for details. There an AXP 2700+ beats a P4 3.06 GHz w/DDR333 in all benchmarks
Upgradability is same with P4 and AXP's. ASUS A7N8X will be usable with all future Athlons faster than 2800+. 3000+ is coming very soon, and faster versions may follow. With P4, upgradability is limited to 3.4 GHz with curent mobos.

The numbers in AMD's CPU line up represents the relative performance when compared to Intel chips. If an Intel chip runs at 2.2 ghz, it's actually running at the clock speed. AMD's 2100+, as someone pointed out, runs at a lower clock speed, but offers performance similar to a 2.1 ghz Intel cpu.
