if i replace my geforce 8800 gts (320mb) with ATI 4850 , will there be a big performance difference in playing CRYSIS and high-end games. (knowing that i will stay with my current pentuim 4 processor)
No, but not becuase there isn't a big difference between an HD 4850 and your current card (there is quite a big difference), but because your CPU is a huge bottleneck here.
I'll go as far as saying you're not even getting the most out of your current card with a P4.
Upgrade your CPU, then think about upgrading the GPU if you really need to.
Why? Because your processor is old and bottle-necking your performance. You may see a minor frame increase 5-10 in some games (likely less in Crysis)
*lol! Dang you, trackman. Beat me to it. *
Think of it this way. Your Processor is a bucket with 3 holes punched in the bottom. Your frames per second is water.
Let's say you fill the bucket up with 70 liters of water every second (70 fps), but your bucket can only drain at a rate of 30 liters per second (fps). After a while, the bucket is going to overflow which is going to wasted water (frames) and you fill up the bucket as full as you'd like, but it will always drain 30 liters per second, maximum.
My advice, save up and upgrade your entire rig. It will be much more satisfying and worth your while.

Upgrade your MB and CPU, you will probably get a nice FPS jump there. But I am guessing that is more expensive than just the video card. But like everyone else said, its your CPU that is holding back your current card.

Get yourself a new CPU, that 3.4 P4 is ancient! Really not up to the standard for modern gaming. A decent option for you would be an AMD Phenom quad core (Preferably the 9950) and a 790 motherboard, or a P35/P45 intel motherboard with an intel E8400/Q6600. That'd give a much better upgrade, in my opinion.
p4 3,4 ghz? You're loosing 90% of the performance, get a proper dual core amd or intel, amd 5000+ is cheap and fast, and uses 800mhz ddr2 wich is even cheaper. The intels use varying rams, you have to keep track of it.

Can i ask what you've been smoking? Unless i've been asleep for the last couple of months, which i severly doubt, DDR2 6400 (the 800mhz stuff) is still perfect for Intel CPUs due to the majority having FSB speeds of 266/333. This therefore gives a significant amount of overclocking headroom if you want to use 1:1 fsb:ram speed ratio, therefore making DDR2-6400 perfect for 95% of Intel CPUs.
