9.8m/s is not a measure of acceleration, it's a measure of speed. Gravity's acceleration is (roughly) 9.8m/s/s, in other words the speed increases by 9.8m/s every second.

And dhlucke? Why the sling? Why couldn't they just grip it by the husk?
