Sapphire returns 128-bit Radeon 9800 Pros

The specs of a Radeon 9800 Pro are well known: 380/680 MHz, 128 MB with 256-bit memory interface. Sapphire released a card called "Radeon 9800 Pro" running at non-pro speeds and with a slower 128-bit memory interface. Many consumers did not notice the sticker "128-bit" before the purchase. Hi i just installed the evga geforce 9800gt 512mb and i tested it on crysis. when i do the run optimal settings it puts me at 800x600 res and all settings on low. i raised it up to up to 1024x768 and medium settings ( wich i have a 24" widescreen so im not happy with it) and i would get around 15-20 fps.

i ran the overclocking tool that came with the card (EVGA precision) and it shows this:

core clock:600MHz
Shader clock 1500MHz
Memory clock: 900MHz

now im not sure if im readig somthing wrong but isnt the memory clock suppost to be 1800MHz?
is there some way the card could be faulty and im only getting half the ram?
i moved the core clock up to 700 and the memory to 1030 and the system would freeze well running crysis.

im running a Asus A8N5X MB with a amd 64 3500+ (2.22ghz) 1gig ram
ATX PSU 12v+ = 18Amp x2

i could understand it being limited some what from the cpu but i would think it would limit it to the point of only being able to run crysis on the lowest settings possible but im also not a pro

any input will be much appreciated

I can already tell by your pc setup its not your graphics card, you need a better proccessor and more Ram, you need AT LEAST 2gb of ram to run crysis decently and a Dual core processor at 3.0 each core then you will be able to run at mostly high/ some medium settings.

-the core clock always shows 1/2 the mem clock in the ntune overclocking, it did the same for me on my old 9600gt

FYI, to the OP, the 9800GT is an 8800GT rebranded,

Core Is your GPU's speed, Shader Clock is just that, and memory, is correct, remember its GDDR3 so its x2 900x2=1800.

As to your CPU and Memory, That CPU is Single Core, and slow, And 1 gig doesnt cut it anymore in most games. They say it will run on a Single Core but not at great settings, same with a gig of ram.

Basically, your system is @ Minimum Req Specs, except your video card.

Here is the recommended specs
Recommended Requirements

CPU: Core 2 Duo/Athlon X2 or better
RAM: 1.5GB
Video Card: NVIDIA 7800 Series, ATI Radeon 1800 Series or better
VRAM: 512MB of Graphics Memory

I think most people agree, Crysis is a poorly optimized beast of a game, to get good framerates with Medium or Higher settings you need much better hardware then they state is required.

As said above. Your cards clocks are fine. It is DDR memory, wich stands for double data rate, so you multiply the 900mhz by 2 and your memorys actual rated speeds is the 1800mhz that you refer to.

The processor and memory are holding you back by a rediculous amount. Believe me. Even When I can OC my core 2 duo that is at 2.8ghz to a high clock speed I see quite an improvement and the game runs significantly better with 4gb than 2gb, so if I cam seeing an increase from 2gb to 4gb that should help put it in perspective for you as to what memory means to the game as well as the CPU. Hope this helps clear up the confusion some.

Best,

hey thanks for the replys. after reading these i added another 1gb stick of ram and got a amd opteron 170 dual core cpu. i know this is no were near top of the line but i should beable to OC it to around 2.6 ghz. i havnt done so yet since the heatsink i orderd hasnt come in the mail yet and i dont want to oc it with the crappy HS im using right now. the only concern im having though is after putting the new memory stick and the cpu in i dont see any improvement. the cpu is only running at 2.1 ghz right now but my other was only 2.2 ghz single core. i havnt ran crysis yet but i started up WOW and i only get an avarage of 14 fps and go as low as 7 on high settings. 1280x760 no level of detail 24 bit color. 24 bit depth 8x multisample. i have AI boost and it shows my cpu is at 98% witch with my old cpu i would only be at 89%
i understand that these upgrades are not going to make me max out my fps but i thought i could get some improvement. these are the same settings i was using with my old cpu and 1 gig of ram and these are the exact same frame rates i had as well

BTW my bios and system properties show the cpu as a dual core AMD opteron 2.02 ghz, and 2.00gb ram
