Is Team Fortress 2 any good?

Hey everyone,

I am looking for a fun multiplayer. TF2 caught my eye and it looks like a lot of fun. So I have a few questions about this game:

1. Do you have to have Half-life 2 installed to play this game? I played the Half-Life 2 Demo a little bit and didn't like anything I saw, so I don't want buy the Orange Box. Can you purchase the game by itself?

2. I heard you could turn off the blood and gore if you wanted to. True?

3. How much profanity does this game contain? And which words are used?. I know everyone has different opinions about profanity but please just give me an honest answer.

4. Can players paint images like porn around the map? How bad is it usually?

Thanks!

TF2 Is an extrememly addictive game. I promise you many many hours of fun if you were to start playing this. In regard to your questions:

1) You dont need to have Half Life 2 installed to play this game, you can install it on its own.

2) You can't turn blood & gore off. It doesn't really matter anyways, the blood & gore isnt really too bad anyways, the worst is that you'll see red stuff on the floor after you die & it will have a message like "your arm" or something like that.

3) In terms of bad words, the only profanity that you will ever see will come from other players typing messages or when using their Mic's.

4) As with any source game, you can spray images around the map with no filter for porn images. For TF2 however, this is an extremely rare occurance, i hardly ever see porn sprays in TF2. Porn sprays usually come up a lot in Counter Strike: Source.

If you are going to purchase it, I would suggest that you get it via Steam, because its only like $19.99 (or £10) for the game on its own or if you want to buy the orange box (Includes: Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Portal, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Team Fortress 2, Peggle Extreme) you can get that for $39.99 (£20).

TF2 is my favorite multiplayer game in years. It's my obsession. I can't begin to describe how much time i've spent with this one.

As far as the profanity and pornographic sprays, I'll say this: I've only ever played maybe a dozen matches out of hundreds upon hundreds where there were porn sprays or other offensive images in the map.

Similarly, I've probably quit maybe 10-12 matches because soe sucker-punching, ignorant douche bag decided to hurl out the N-word, F-word or other offensive racial epithets (and that's my strict policy. Quit the match immediately and never play with that individual again. Zero tolerance).

While that number seems like a lot, you really have to understand how much this game has dominated my time in the last year. It's disturbing.

i once had someone play some classic cheesy pop from my youth over the comm system, that is about the worst thing i can think of that happened in tf2 although haven't played in a while.

I hate when they do that. And honestly, that my be my biggest/only complaint about TF2.

one of the songs was this just in case anyone is interested, great song.

I've heard that song on a few different occasions. It gets annoying quickly.

You guys realise that you can mute someones in game voice right? Just hit Esc and the option is about 3rd from the top, makes everything a lot easier.

Are you guys kidding? I love when people do that, it makes me laugh so much :D As long as they are funny sounds and not lame ones.

I'd describe TF2 kinda like Christmas... always great, always fun, and never boring. The only game that I can think that can possibly drag me away from it in the foreseeable future is Left 4 Dead.

This gives me an idea though, why doesn't Tom's host a TF2 server :hello: ? "-THG- TF2 Public" sounds like a good name for a server...

We've been playing around with the idea of hosting a TF2 server. There's just a couple problems. First, I'm not sure it's healty for me and others on staff to be playing this game anymore than we already are. Second, we've got resources tied up in some other stuff right now (like relaunching Tom's Games) and I don't want to host a TF2 server if it's going to be a half-assed effort. But if there was enough demand and interested parties, I think we could probably find a way to make it so....

Hmmm drop Tom's Guide and use the extra bandwidth to host it :p Just Kidding........ Or am I...? Anyway I'd be definitely interested, since it's basically all that I play lately (with the exception of STALKER) and Left 4 Dead might keep me from playing it too, but I'll always end up coming back.

I think you should post a poll about this on the Tom's Games area and see what the response is. But seriously, if you need the extra bandwidth for it I think it would be a sacrifice, but we'll live without Tom's Guide... So think about that one :)

Hey Rob, I've been meaning to ask, any favorite servers you play on? Wouldn't mind trying to find you so I can test myself a bit.

Also have to add, once you go TF2 it's hard to accept any other MP experience. Simply the best and by far most addictive.

I hate the comercials too.

Hey all, long time reader, too lazy to register. But a topic on my current obsession (just ask the wife!) was the perfect thing to spur me into singing up for the forums.

@Physx - TF2 is a fantastic game, one that is easy to pick up, but that you will still be mastering many hours later.

regarding your Q's, my response to how "clean" TF2 servers are depends on why you ask. If it is because you personally do not enjoy seeing or hearing foul material, then I'd say your pretty safe. As the other above me have said, 99% of the time I've spent playing TF2 has been incident free.

BUT, if you're asking because you want to know if it is appropriate for a younger person, then I would just caution that you never know when you might cross a disturbing spray, or catch an earfull of verbal throwup.

@Rob, I personally would love to see a Tom's server (or server set, if I'm to be greedy) :p So if my vote counts, but it in the "aye" column.

Cheers to all!

I don't have any particular favorites for servers, though according to my Steam account I've played quite a bit on Lotusclan.com and Doorman is God servers lately. If you're trying to find me, my forum avatar should give you a hint as to my Steam nickname. I'm also playing CP_orangeX3 maps quite a bit these days. I love playing the Pyro and jumping off the central tower, ambushing unassuming opponents below...

Oh goodness, Aleksandir...you have no idea the riches that await you on the PC. I'm not a console-hating snob/PC elitist, but I have to say the PC version of TF2 is the ONLY version of TF2. The max player limit alone sets it far above the console version (16 player limit? Really? Really?). The competition-teamwork is also superior -- I played with far too many people on the 360 version who didn't know basic stuff like how to Uber. I mean, come on. And voice chat! Get with the program, people~

But the variety of custom maps, mods, etc....I get chills just thinking about it. In fact, I'm going to jump on right now....

Sorry for bringing this topic back to life, but I feel some answers were not given in the topic which may help others who are looking for information.

1. TF2 is a standalone game, You don't need any other game to be able to play it.

2. Yes you can turn off the gore. You can put the following command in your config file:

violence_agibs "0"
violence_hgibs "0"
violence_ablood "0"
bloodspray 0
violence_hblood "0" //disable human blood
violence_ablood 0 //disable alien blood

You can do this with all half life games since they share the same/similar engine.

3. I've been playing it for few days and the only profane word that I have come across in the game so far is "w@nker" when the sniper sometimes gets a headshot. He says "Wave goodbye to yer head, w@nker:"

4. Unlike previous half life games, in TF2 you can disable sprays straight from the menu. You can also add these commands in your config file:

cl_playersparyenable //disable sprays
decals to 0
cl_allowdownload 0
r_spray_lifetime 0

The smaller one is only $29.99, right?
