Help with a7n8x nic cards

Bought a new system with the A7N8X deluxe Motherboard and am having problems connecting to the internet. I know the net is working cause i here now on my old system. When I bring up network connections under control panel it shows the 2 local area connections :the NVIDIA and the 3COM. and Also the 1394 Net adapter. I have the Nvidia disabled and the modem plugged into the 3 com port. I have set up the ICP setting as per COX cable for WIN XP. On the back of the computer you can sse the light blinking at the ethernet
