Yes it will provide a considerable bump in most games.

The THG ranking chart shows the GT 240 as seven steps higher than the 8600GT.

I could not find both on the THG Performance Charts, but on the above charts the GT 240 is at the same level as the 8800 GTS so the performance of those two should be about the same. Here is an excerpt from the Performance Charts comparing the 8800 GTS - as the proxy for the GT 240 - with the 8600GT. You can see that the increase is substantial in many games, less of an increase in a few. So the size of increase you experience will depend on the specfic games you play.

For $40 you should get a nice increase in performance, not to mention lower power requirements and a newer, more reliable card.

But also note the deal I listed on the GTX 250 for $10 more. The following chart shows that its performance is about 50% to 100% faster than the GT 240, depending on the game.
