I have an HP4 printer, set up so that it will take paper first from
the multi-purpose tray, then, failing that, from the main paper
cassette. This all works fine when I am printing on A4 paper.

But if I specify another size (in software), it behaves oddly: for
instance, in OpenOffice I have a template which specifies a DL size
envelope. When I try to print an envelope, the printer first asks for
Manual Feed DL. Then, after I press Shift-Continue, instead of
printing the job on the envelope I have placed in the MP tray, the
printer asks for Paper Cassette DL. If I then press continue, it
takes paper from the PC, which of course is not what I wanted.

How can I persuade it actually to print on the paper in the MP tray
that it has asked for? Incidentally, the problem does not only happen
in OpenOffice. My computer is running Fedora Core 1 Linux with Cups.

HP LJ4 with PCL or PostScript driver? They are different, and I would imagine
that the PostScript driver would have fewer defects. Of course, you also need a
PostScript SIMM for the LJ4... Ben Myers

I normally use the Postscript driver.
