Here's the deal, I want to build a char that can run Baal loaded with mf
with an insane amount of lag on a really slow computer. It may be
impossible, but any ideas?
It would also be nice if said build would employ a HF or a Prayer merc. I
have an eth Kelpie and an Insight in an eth Colossus Voulge laying around.

Sounds to me like you wanna build a skelliemancer. They're great for safety
(get the biggest army you can, don't forget to max mages as well - they're
slow killers but they keep the heat away from you)., and a prayer merc is
great for these guys since they help keep the entire army alive.
As for MF, it depends on what you define as a lot of it. My skelliemancer
has 367MF form gear and charms, and that seems to work very nicely.
The biggest drawback to this build is that he's not the fastest killer
around. Baal runs do take some time for me

While pure summoners work, they don't work with massive amounts of lag and a
slow comp. I'd barely be able to move with a screen full of skellies.
You'll notice if you ever see my necro, all he has is a golem because of
this. Minions bog things down very fast.
As far as the mf goes, my fire sorc packs about 550. Its hard to pull that
on another character type without sacrificing major amounts of damage
though. Its a shame the minions are fire immune, she rips though
everything. A pure lightning sorc would actually work against the throne
room and baal, but sadly teleporting isn't the easiest thing to do on my
computer.

HC or SC?
A hammerdin is probably what you are looking for, IMO.

Understood on the teleporting part. That can indeed be tricky on a speed or
connection challenged PC.
In that case, have you considered a pure lightning sorceress with maxed block.
Or even orb/chain lightning with maxed block? Introduce an insight stick
into the mix if you have any mana problems (base energy is a good choice for a
block sorc in SC or HC), bearing in mind that CL is somewhat of a mana
guzzler. Points spread tends to be enough strength for gear, and dex/vit
tends to be somewhat even at end-game, with blocking maxed with a high block
shield such as an upped visceratuant or mosers, sanctuary, etc. "Rhyme" in a
grim shield, heater or luna works well also.

I've been experimenting with a lightning sorc in SP. Gloams have been an
issue, but I think I might be able to tele at least that much. Then again,
this isn't a char I'm really going to worry about XP with. It is a major
pain when the throne room is full of them. I'll have to give splitting it
with orb a try.
How many points are needed to make orb viable?

1 CM will break immunes? I don't see how the 20th point in FO can
give a better return in damage than a second point in CM.

Newsflash Roy, 50 points in CM doesn't break cold immunes. Mainly cause CM
CANNOT BREAK cold immunes. Lower Resist can, Conviction can. Nothing else.
Here's Arreat Summit's word on it:
"Cold Mastery will not work against monsters that are Immune to Cold. So
even if you have Enemy Resistance -105%, they will still be Cold Immune and
you will still be unable to damage them."
Any sorc will have decent +skills even with an MF setup on. And +skills will
get CM to a good enough level on it's own.

I guess that's in the eye of the beholder. I run with it at around 16 or 18
including items on my hydra sorceress (80+ points in the fire tree didn't
leave much room), and that's workable in solo games, at least. I usually aim
to have at least 10 hard points in it by the beginning of hell, and play it by
ear from there.
It's interesting that you mentioned lightning sorc, because my next planned SC
sorceress Illyrian will be lightning plus cold. Charged Bolt will be her
primary lightning attack, but I might also pick up CL while I'm there,
depending on how my preference for orb (and how much CM, specifically) turns
out for this one. Might be nice, though, since CL would get the double
whammy synergy from maxed CB and lightning.

I experimented some more. A max black sorc works with Charged Bolt, but not
so much with CL. Its just too much of a mana hog. Ah, my sorcs never had
max block anyway.

that.
Did you give your SP experiment an insight stick, using the SP runewords

It's a SP 'mod' that enables the Realms Runewords. It might also allow you
to meet the Clone, not sure on that one though. Check out the Phrozen Keep

I'm not sure specifically how this particular mod works. But in general they
just replace the patch_d2.mpq file (something like that). So what I do is
make a subdirectory in my diabloII folder called 'undomod'. When I want to
play the mod I move the original patch_d2.mpq file into that folder and move
the mod patch_d2.mpq file in from the mod folder. When you want to switch
back to vanilla D2 just reverse the process. Remove the mod file and replace
with the original. I also move the saved characters into their respective
folders so that there is no cross pollination.

I'd guess it takes less than a minute, but I haven't timed it. That's with
11 of each skellie, a golem and a lvl 88 prayer merc equipped with an eth

That's the whole POINT of minion stacking and telekill. When you teleport on
top of him, they all are standing directly on top of him and hitting, cause
they're all in the same spot, which they can't normally be. That's also why
you can't be targeted by hostile players spells and attacks, cause they are
all right on top of you, and even if they click you the attack targets one
of the summons. As long as you have a "large" non-flying revive(balrog,
venom lord, etc), they stay stacked exactly where they are until YOU move,
until the target moves, or until the target dies dies(then they swarm out
after the next target), whichever comes first.

Even with an Insight stick? And how much mana did she have?
With around 6-800 Mana and an Insight Stick, I can't get my Sorc to run out
of Mana if I try. Barring Manaburners, of course.
The problem is that on a bad connection, its better to have to drink blues
and live than have mana and die all the time

Well, I'm used to playing with the lag. The block would certainly help
against ranged attacks, but I've gotten pretty good at getting my merc to
eat those.
I don't know how much the insight would help, I haven't been able to get it

Tell me how much mana she has and I can figure it out
My Tal's Sorc has just over 800 all geared up, and a whole lot less when not
I haven't tried it completely naked, but I can to see if it works. What
I've noticed when teleporting is that I'll lose the initial mana cost for
the first TP, and then my mana ball pretty much stays the same if I keep the
button pressed down. If I actually click repeatedly, I'll start gaining
some mana back.

Ah yes, memories of the joys of telekilling PKs with a necro and 20
Death Lords in tow. Sneak up, cast AD and teleport on said PKs nose...

A bit late, but I find it easier to just rename the patch_d2.mpq file

original, .ar for Ancestral Recall, etc., then just delete the extra
extension for whichever one I want to play.
