please don't mention upscaled resolutions or what it says on the back of the box because that's just the output resolution not the real rendered resolution.

in many cases it is hard to tell unless you download a copy of the game then extract some of the textures from it

most consoles cant give the full HD resolution for many games because they are simply not fast enough to handle it so some textures will be low res while others will be high res. but most of the textures are low res and the resolution of the wireframe is higher, this allows object edges to look smoother with out using a high level of anti aliasing which is even more taxing on the card, and it doesn't do much for textures but it helps improve overall image quality

I have no real knowledge but seeing as what hardware is in them i doubt that much if any, especially the ps3 as it's gfx hardware blows.

Sheesh, that sounds like such a flame bait post but it is true.

I know most of the sports games display at 1080p, but don't know if thats the native resolution...

There are very few titles on the PS3 that run in true 1080p and even fewer on the Xbox 360. While a game like Gran Turismo 5 isn't 1920x1080 it is technically 1080p. The game is rendered at 1280x1080 with a widescreen field of view and the game is then stretched to fit 1920x1080 which actually does make the game look noticeably better than 720p, but it isn't really the same as TRUE 1080p. There are quite a few downloadable titles on the PS3 that run in TRUE 1080p, but they are mostly games similar to what would be found on the Xbox Live Arcade. The 360's biggest problem with doing true 1080p is probably the fact that the 10MB of embedded eDRAM that is used as a frame buffer was designed with 720p specifically in mind. Had it been larger, it would it would likely be better for 1080p gaming than the PS3 is.

One thing that is nice about the 360 though is the hardware upscaling so if your TV is set to 1080p, EVERYTHING is upscaled to 1080p. On the PS3, if the developer doesn't specifically make it so the game upscales to 1080p and it is natively 720p, the output resolution will be 720p. It's not really a big deal in that specific case, but say you have an older TV that only supports 1080i and 480p, your 360 will scale 720p to 1080i but the PS3 will only do it if the developer decides to implement it.

after some digging around i found that these are the only games in real 1920x1080

Playstation 3

Cars Mater-National = 1920x1080 (QAA)
Fifa Street 3 = 1920x1080 (no AA)
Full Auto 2 (demo) = 1920x1080 (4x AA)
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (screenshot) = 1920x1080 (no AA)
NBA07 (demo) = 1920x1080 (no AA)
NBA08 (demo) = 1920x1080 (no AA)
NBA Street Home court (screenshot) = 1920x1080 (no AA)
Ridge Racer 7 (demo) = 1920x1080 (no AA)
Virtua Tennis 3 (demo) = 1920x1080 (2x AA)
World Series Of Poker 2008 = 1920x1080 (2xAA)

Those are the only native 1080p games on the PS3.
PSN games are excluded.

xbox 360

NBA Street: 1920x1080 AA 4x (30-60fps) - 360
Virtua Tennis 3: 1920x1080 AA 2x - 360

Pretty disappointing after how much the consoles were was hyped up, especially the ps3, i remember Sony were saying that it was gonna do 1920x1080 at 120fps.

All the titles that run in true hd have sucky graphics. Major titles with good graphics can't run at resolutions that high on the weak console hardware.

By that time PC would've moved on further. Consoles are always a step... or rather a football field behind. :p

Heya,

Speaking of which, I play my games on my PC at 1920x1080 on my 42" plasma HDTV that is 1080p. I just don't see the point of consoles.

Cheers,

I can play ps1 games in high res on a PC emulator and the ps2 emulator is just starting to become decent, i guess ill just wait 10-15 years until there's a ps3/360 emulator for PC.

I don't bother really, but the PS3 and Xbox 360 has little 1080p titles. I don't know if they will bring out more in the future.

To be honest, I don't really see enough of a difference to favour 1080p.
But Xbox 360 has alot less true 1080p titles than PS3, but again... it doesn't bother me as the online and everything else on the 360 makes up for it :)

;) :D

Yeah, if you're sitting at the proper distance from a good HDTV, the difference between true 1080p and 720p being upscaled on the 360 is almost completely unnoticeable. Don't forget that Sony is also one of the largest sellers of HDTVs, so they'll try and do whatever they can to market their other products with the PS3.

Whats the point of waiting for the ps3 emulator by that time we'll probably have ray tracing.
