Have you tried this:

Right-click the taskbar -> Properties -> in the "Notification Area" section, click the "Customize" button

...and then setting the appropriate icons to "Show icon and notifications"?

Best solution

+1. Windows 7 hides most tray icons by default. You have to set it to "Show" for it to stay in view. But even when hidden, you can view all the tray icons by clicking on the small arrow just to the left of the tray.

Do the icons show up in the dialogue box that lets you choose which notifications to display (see my previous post)? If so, what is the setting in the drop-down listbox beside them?

I've seen something similar in XP a few times. Logging out and back in, or restarting the explorer.exe process, usually fixes the problem. No idea why this would happen or how to fix it on Win 7 though.

Very interesting. I can't imagine why the registry method would work and the dialogue box wouldn't, since they're both changing the same registry keys.

Thanks for the follow-up!
