What is the best processor and memory upgrade worth doing to my old P2B-D that would be reliable and inexpensive? I currently have 400Mz processors.

I recommend two of the rare PIII 1000E processors that run at 100MHz bus (as opposed to the 1000EB that runs at 133MHz). Otherwise, the PIII 850E is more common (all PIII 850's are "E").

Thanks Crashman, I have a couple of those 1G/100Mz CPU's but they are in other PC's. The last I recall, they were about $200 ea, so I'd be putting in $400.

I really need more horsepower than 1Gz and was hoping there was a slot adapter etc that would take me to 2Gz or better for about the same cost.

My primary app is a very intensive number crunching financial app that is optomized for multi-processors. I run it today on a 1Gz with lots of ram and it just doesn't cut it.

Is there a "reasonably" priced alternative mobo/cpu combination that is solid?

Well, if you can find the right jumper settings you might be able to get to 133MHz bus speed and use a couple PIII 1.4GHz Tualatin CPU's on Slot-T adapters.

Compgeeks often carries the Slot 1 1000E for around $100.
