Progress Report: G Cycle Completed!

Well, I finally did it: a G cycle --living guardians of all seven
classes, all on the ladder, all on one account (hcladdrteam, USWest).
Most of them played their first half hour or so in pubbies to get to
clvl 9, then went right into Amazon Basin games and stayed there. On
a few occasions I played some of them solo in my own games. I give
total credit and thanks for this G cycle to the wonderful folks at the
Amazon Basin: I had never even got half way to finishing a G cycle
before because of losses to PKs in public games.

These chars' clvls at the time of making guardian ranged from 75 to
82, and all of them are able to solo pretty much everything in Hell
except the Ancients. The skelemancer (BringOucherDead), trapper
(SweetAssin) and Conc barb (BahdockMahthlth) are untwinked, while the
hammerdin (HavGunWilTravl), furyzon (Steel_Bikini), windruid
(Element-tree) and orb/chain sorc (Twinker-Belle) are twinked. I'm
sure I could get an untwinked hammerdin or windruid to guardian
without much difficulty -- my current ironman project is a hammerdin
who is one session away from making Destroyer -- but getting a zon or
especially sorc to guardian untwinked presents much more of a
challenge.

The skelemancer and trapper were fairly uneventful builds (they're
also two of my favorites to play in 1.10), although I did have to
rebuild the trapper once when she died to a nasty stair trap (XF doll
boss pack) entering the Hell Throne room {:^( That one hurt. IMO the
main thing for HC skele- or bone-mancers and trappers to remember is
this: _Don't_use_CE_or_DS_around_dolls_. The skelemancer also had a
very close call when he was blowing up some ordinary shaman-type
dolls, which don't explode, and then some undead ones showed up...

I was originally going to build the hammerdin untwinked, but I had
access to a HoZ, GA, and +2 pal skills ammy, so figured I might as
well use them. It seems to be very hard to find a good scepter for a
hammerdin, though, and he ended up using a Suicide Branch. A Spirit
sword would have been better, of course, but that batch of words came
out after he was done. Spirit swords are so overpowered they're
cheesy, in case you were wondering...

The windruid was also contemplated as an untwinked build, but I had a
Jalal's, Earthshaker and other nice e-druid gear sitting around on
mules, and so wanted to get some use out of them before the ladder
resets. I'm thinking of a windruid as a possible ironman build, but
have yet to think of a good way to deal with PI-CI bosses. The
furyzon was built to use Titan's, T-Gods, a Vamp Gaze and some nice
rare +2 zon gloves; I probably wouldn't have even tried building her
untwinked.

The Conc barb was a hard slog, but quite rewarding to play: I just
love a problem-solving challenge! He couldn't seem to find a decent
one-handed mace with some damage on it, and even in late NM was still
using a crummy gemmed thing from A3 Normal. He did better once he
could buy himself a couple of echoing swords (which also made him
popular at parties), but was still bogged down in A1 Hell until he
found a Demon Limb. Then things went faster, but it's still a
slow-killing build. He also got a Windhammer around the same time,
but by that time he needed so much more str to use it, he barely made
enough levels for it by the time he got to Hell Meph. The tome quest
helped on that score.

The orb/chain sorc was the last one on the list, and took by far the
longest to make. I originally started her untwinked, but after having
to rebuild her a few times from her 50s and 60s, I decided twinking
was going to be needed. It was still hard, though, and I ended up
rebuilding the twinked version another half-dozen times, losing a
considerable amount of good gear in the process (two unlooted deaths
while soloing in late NM). Charms were in especially tight supply
towards the end, and I had to strip the other G cycle chars of most of
their best res charms (including the hammerdin's Annihilus, which the
windruid had also used) to get the job done.

I'd be interested in reading reports from any others on agd who have
tried to put together a G cycle.

Conc is a good, safe barb attack for HC; but like I said, if you don't
have a good weapon, killing anything solo is sloooow once you get to
late NM and Hell.

That's one build I've never tried, because being locked in place until
the strafe attack ends is just too scary in HC, IMO.

I find the relative item poverty one of the interesting and enjoyable
challenges of HC, and of course untwinked chars or playing after a
ladder reset are even more interesting.

Well Done Roy. And to think that I was almost there for the finale. (I
was in an AB game with you and we did the statue in Act 3) Damn. If
only I had known.

Anyways, a Guardian Cycle in HC is an impressive thing. I guess next
will be the Ironman G-Cycle. :)

Great work Roy, gotta hand it to you.

As for my progress - forget the G cycle. Why? Because I will never play
an assassin let alone an assassin in HC and I will never play a necro.

Maybe I'll make a 5 crew G cycle, but even then my aspirations for it
are minimal.

I'd feel content with getting a Zon through.

Looking forward to the day where I only play about 10 hours a week.

Trappers and skelemancers are two of my fave builds (even tried them
in ironman). Why won't you play 'em?
