Every time I try to switch users on Windows XP, it restarts the computer (in
order for it to not restart I have to log off the user, and then it loses all
the programs I had running, so either way I'm screwed). I've searched and I
can't figure out how to get it to stop restarting whenever I want to switch.
Why does it do this, and how can I get it to stop?

Use fast-switching
Go to Control Panel>User Accounts>Change to way users log on/off

Try turning off the "auto restart feature" Go to Control Panel->System
Properties->Advanced Tab->Startup and Recovery Section. Click Settings
button. Uncheck the box next to Automatically restart on system
failure.Rather than reboot you should get a screen that could help us sort
out what is happening.

Another place to look is in Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event
Viewer->System section. Look for Items that indicate problems and double
click to open them.
