On a friends pc if you tried to run regedit or task manager the window
would open and immediately disappear.

Norton Anti-virus found nothing.
Spybot found nothing.
Various other programs found nothing.

I renamed regedit.exe to regedit.com, ran regedit.com and it worked.

In registry run options there was an entry, REAIPLAY.exe
That's REA i PLAY.exe, I removed it, rebooted and it can back.

I booted in safemode and deleted the program REAiPLAY.exe and registry
entry and now every thing works fine.

Prehaps this solution might help someone else with a disappearing
regedit window.

A disappearing regedit and task manager are signs of the Blaster virus, of
which reaiplay.exe is a variant. The fact that your friend's antivirus
software doesn't identify it shows three things:

1. If your friend had antivirus software installed at the time of the
infection, it was either not correctly configured or not updated or both.

2. Your friend attempted to remove the virus manually, unsucessfully, but
did manage to reduce the virus to the point where antivirus software was no
longer able able to identify it.

3. Your friend doesn't visit Windows Update, which provided a patch for the
problem shortly before the virus first appeared, during the summer of 2003.

To sum up: A self-inflicted wound that was easily avoided.
