New 1700+ with DDR on a Fic AD11 with Amd761 northbridge came today. The 761 has a fan which is normally held in place by 2 plastic pins but my trusty unit came with only one so the fan is free to spin and clunk around. I'm guessing that the fan needs to be on and running and needs 2 pins (which I don't have)correct?? I can't believe that one lousy plastic pin is gonna keep me from running this baby. Crap! Are these pins common and can I get one local asap?

Maybe you can use a screw to mount it, dunno if you can find those pins easily.

With a hovering case crashing takes a whole new meaning... .

You can find small nylon bolts/nuts down at Low's. I doubt Wally World would have them.

Other than that, you can use some super glue and some plastic from Hobby Lobby to hold something in place.

can you steal one off of an old video card ? or use some thermal tape \ adhesive instead of the pin

Ha! I found a pin from a slot cpu holder that will work good enough. BTW a metal screw will not work cause there are many traces VERY close to the hole.

Man the case they sent is a POS. Ok you know how on like every other case I have ever seen there a place to put a screw to hold down PCI/AGP cards? Well this hunk of junk ain't got em. The back of the case is flat with no step to put a screw in. Where the tab of a pci card would go they cut a 5 by 0.5 inch hole for the tabs to stick out. Then they made a 5 by 0.5 by 0.5 inch box to cover the hole but the box has no screw holes in it to secure cards. I didn't expect a great case but this thing is crazy cheap. This dog is a Tiger Direct f451-3007 barebones kit. It should be running today.

It lives! Intel sucks! I'm an AMD head now. This thing is great. It is so fast, takes like 20 sec to boot. Been cold here the last few days and this baby puts out some heat. I can't believe that such a small chip can put out that much thermal energy. There is a very noticable stream of hot air that comes out the back and warms my tootsies. Maybe I'll stick linux on the new box so I can sleep better at night. Down with Intel, down with M$!

It lives and it hooks up. This is being posted for the first time by an AMD 1700+ and it feels so good.

Man I can't get over what junk the case is. If you pick it up with one side off it flexes enough to uproot your cards and it won't boot. The solder side is riveted shut and can't be opened without drilling but the hd cage needs to be removed to get the hd in (or the mb needs moved) but one of the screws is on the solder side so it will not come out. Luckly the metal is so thin it bends easy so a the hd is in with a little extra pushing. A second hd would require the mb out.

While I'm b!tchin, the mb sucks too, just not as bad as the case. To keep the cpu cool you need a big fan but right next to the cpu socket are a row of huge caps that totally get in the way of installing the hs/fan. Plus the ps gets in the way on the other side of the cpu socket. I fixed that problem by taking out the ps to install the hs/fan. All this stuff is no big deal cause I have built many systems and know what to do but a newbee should definately stay away from this barebones kit IMO.

What brand is that case?

yeah... whats the case brand... and why did u go for a 761 chipset?

i know the 761 is reliable, but the kt333 gives alot better performance.

P.S. and when im looking for a motherboard one of the prime requisites is a nice clean CPU socket.

P.P.S. what cooler are you using?

Cooler is a Speeze 5t060b1h3t similar to this one http://www.spirecoolers.com/products/5t060b1h3R.htm

I went with the 761 because I'm lazy. I had a dvd, cd-rw, and hd sitting around collecting dust and saw this barebones kit that came with almost everything else that it takes to build a computer so I bought it. I was not expecting top of the line hardware but the case is beyond cheap. The MB is ok but the installation of the cooler was way trickier then it needed to be.

I LOVE Dell's cooling solutions. They are putting the hs only on the cpu and are putting the fan on the case with a duct to the cpu/hs. This design allows for a huge, slow moving, quiet, fan to blow plenty of vibration free air across a stationary hs. The duct also has the added benefit of keeping any stray wires out of the fan.

The case is completely generic. Tiger Direct says that the case may very and I've looked all over the paperwork and the case itself and cannot find a brand anywhere. The ps is a MACRON.

I drilled pairs of holes in the little card cover box I spoke of eariler. One hole for a screwdriver and a second tapped hole for the pci/agp card hold down screw.
