how come when I attacked a friendly guard at a castle he didnt do anything to me? and only long ranged weapons seemed to hit him?

Good Old Mount and Blade it has quite a following on one of the other forums I post on. I suggest you ask on the official M&B forum I doubt you will get of a response to technical issues on here.

If you have no joy try here (this is the other forum I was telling you about) lots of people play so they might know. The chances are it's a bug that will be addressed in the next patch.
