prompting me for a password that I have no Idea what it is! Tried the F8
button and typed in administrator, still asks for password. I tried ther

The seller should have formatted the drive and installed Windows XP clean to
remove all personalisation. Let me guess, you bought this from eBay, right?
The seller was also obligated to provide you with all discs that were
supplied with the unit, including the Windows disc (or whatever means is
necessary to reinstall the OS, HP uses a recovery CD to unlock a hidden
partition). If they did not, then you must go back to them and insist that
they supply you with them, if they refuse, you are entitled to demand a full
refund -how did you pay for this computer? I hope it was via some form of
insurable means (usually that means a credit card) and you didn't wire the
seller the money!

If you don't have the disc, the installation is not legal, and you have no
means of restoring it should you need to in the future.

As I see it, you now have two choices: -

1) Go back to the seller and demand they give you everything you're
entitled to (i.e. all the software that was supplied with the system when
they purchased it)
2) Purchase a full version of XP in the flavour of your choice (if
purchasing Home, you will be required to format as you cannot install Home
over Pro. If you purchase Pro, you may perform a repair installation).

In either case, there isn't much you can do without the CD. I know which
route I'd rather take.

Format it, create a clean installation. You really don't want someone else's
trashed installation anyways.

You change the boot order in the BIOS (if you don't know what key to press
to enter the BIOS, the visit the system manufacturer's website) and have it
boot from the CD drive containing the XP CD. If you do not have the XP CD,
see my first reply.

If Windows XP was pre-installed and already logged in once to create the
Administrator account, maybe they probably left the password blank. So
login with username = "Administrator" and password = blank to see if
that works.

If this is a used computer, do you really want whatever got left on the
hard disk? How do you know it isn't infected, corrupted, flaky, or so
screwed up that you'll waste lots of weeks trying to cure it? Do you
know if the seller wiped the drive and did a fresh install of Windows XP
for your use? What installation media did you get? How did you
"acquire" this used PC?

If the Windows XP installation CD was provided, you can boot using it
and then select to delete, create, and format partitions on your hard
disk. If the CD doesn't boot then go into BIOS to setup the boot drive
sequence order to include the CD/DVD drive. If you never got the
Windows XP installation CD, maybe you got a restore or recovery CD which
contains a drive image which a restore will them wipe the disk to
restore the image. Might help if you describe WHAT you bought and what
installation media came with it.

Hi,

Read Vanguard's post - you need the installation media. This could come in
many forms, but should've been included with the system. If not, you will
need to purchase your own.
