Or are there better console racing options out there? I know TDU is over 2 years old by now.

But I definitely enjoyed the arcade-style racing; the rendering of Oahu is pretty impressive.

Does any newer racer do a better job of presenting a large, free-roam environment?

The only other modern console racing game I've played is Forza 2, which came with my Xbox 360. I enjoyed TDU a lot more.
