I am lost in the windows xp. My computer has just expired it's warrenty, and
my hard drive is making noises. I have searched where I use to find scan disk
in the old windows 98 but do not find it. Can anyone help me please? I really
think my hard drive is about to crash if I don't fix it soon.

A new HD if $20 after rebate at CompUSA and BestBuy
You may want to delete the temp files in C:\Windows\Temp
Or you may want to use the WindowsUpdate
Or maybe visit the PC vendor for updates for the PC BIOS and/or the HD
Good luck.

Be wary of a drive making odd noises (grinding or clacking). No amount of
scandisk or chkdsk will save a drive that is about to fail. Recommend
creating copies of your important data and moving those to other media for
safekeeping. Then figure out what's going on with the drive.

Windows XP has CHKDSK.
In My Computer, right click your hard drive.
Click on "Properties"
In the "Tools" tab, click "Check Now"
When the CHKDSK window comes up, put a check mark in both boxes
Click "Start"
A window should come up telling you that you will need to restart you
computer.
Click "OK"
Restart the computer
CHKDSK will start.

Chkdsk
Creates and displays a status report for the disk. The chkdsk command also
lists and corrects errors on the disk.

The chkdsk command with the parameters listed below is only available when
you are using the Recovery Console. The chkdsk command with different
parameters is available from the command prompt.

chkdsk [drive:] [/p] [/r]

Parameters

none

Used without parameters, chkdsk displays the status of the disk in the
current drive.

drive:

Specifies the drive that you want chkdsk to check.

/p

Performs an exhaustive check even if the drive is not marked for chkdsk to
run. This parameter does not make any changes to the drive.

/r

Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. Implies /p.

Note

a.. The chkdsk command requires the file Autochk.exe. If it cannot find it
in the startup directory (\%systemroot%\System32, by default), it will
attempt to locate it on the Windows Installation CD. If you have a multiboot
computer, be sure you are issuing this command from the drive containing
Windows.
