hi

I'm a complete beginner to building my own pc.
I've bought an AMD 2000+ chip and the instruction guide says I need a Socket A motherboard.

looking on THWG I can't find a keyword for Socket A motherboards - could it be that they are listed under another name?

I did look months ago when they reviewed a number of boards and then talked about not having thermal protection and that new ones were coming out. I was particularly interested in the Gigabyte motherboard. Does anyone know if they have upgraded that motherboard with thermal protection?

thanks, sorry to ask such a stupid question!

socket A

means that the motherboard will run a athlonXP processor.

different chips need different motherboards to run
Pentium 4's use socket 478 (i think)

so avoid them!!!!

go here and you can look at the motherboards they offer you will notice different catergorys
each is for a different chip e.g. p3, p4, athlon etc...

www.pp.co.nz

you will be looking at socket A only
