I lost my Audiovox 95xx a while back and my new every 2 is coming up.
Audiovox 8600 is $80 and the 8900 is $100, etc. I'd like to get a phone
with a camera for the novelty of it But Verizon is offering buy one get
one free on a number of $50 models. I don't know what to do. If you
had a $100 credit, which phone would you get either within or over the
limit?

TIA

Personally, for me, neither. I have had a credit for NE2 for 4 years, and
just buy phones I like on sale, or from ebay, and activate them (onlin) on
my existing verizon account.

ETF is $175 so if you get a phone you can sell for at least that
amount on eBay you are even. If you are looking for the best
bargain, get the phone where there is the greatest difference in
price between eBay and VZW.

Also IMHO stay away from Audiovox. The current generation of camera
phones aren't really worth it.

Early Termination Fee. The amount you have to pay if you want to

While I've heard the caution about Audiovox as well.... the 8900 is a
tri-mode, and we haven't had any complaints.

However, as you thought: get the most phone you can for the lowest price.
Alternatively, considering the rebates and NE2, get the most phone you can
afford.

Just a thought: if you do get a new phone, and then cancel, they may ask
for the phone back, since the EFT is not to cover the phone subsidy. WHY:
you ask: even if you furnish your own phone with a new contract, the EFT
applies. If we think of ourselves as "fair", it would be dishonest to get a
subsidized phone, and then cancel. Let your conscious guide you.

Please take this in the way I mean it, just in case it is conveyed
wrong.(no disrespect intended) Verizon has no power over me if I
supply my own equipment for install or for hand held or squat. I and
the original poster would not need a "contract" if the service was
complete with my ownership of the phone. In example: I always buy my
phones and pay the install price for the car kits. If I want to leave
in 1 day or 1 year that is my option since I would be doing Verizon a
favor by paying for their cellular service, I would not allow any
Verizon employee to give me or talk me into a contract term under
those conditions.

Maybe I am reading your reply incorrect? If so please elaborate. It
has been a long day and I am heading to the watering hole for a needed
cocktail :-)

Fine.

What?!?! VZW contracts include an ETF. Yes, the ETF *is* primarily
to cover the equipment subsidy. I suppose it's intent to reduce churn
is a close second and maybe equivalent.

VZW requires a contract (minimum 1yr.) to establish new service.
Whether you supply your own equipment or not. You can't possibly
draw any conclusions about the ETF's purpose from this! Try this:
My guess is that *way* more than 99% of new customers buy equipment
when establishing an account. There is no way to justify the overhead
of a special contract for a fractional percentage point of their customers.
(Certainly a contract term of more than 1 month would be required to
cover the administrative costs of establishing a new account -- credit
check, billing setup, contract and new customer brochures, vmail setup,
etc.)

"Fair" has nothing to do with VZW's contracts and offers. They will
have no problem with anyone taking full advantage of anything they
officially offer. Yeesh... where did you come up with this one?...
"Let your conscious guide you." By the way, my conscience works
whether I'm concious or not -:)

O brother... Yes, VZW *does* have the power to not offer you
service if you don't agree to their terms. It is true that they have
no power to force you to buy their service.

Wrong.

Let me guess... this is a *hypothetical* example. You actually did
get a contract the first time you got service (or it was with the company
before VZW bought them).

Both you and wiremore have become delerious at the same time.
If you are in the same geographical area I would be a bit concerned
about airborn toxins....

The Dr. I know not where he resides. I am in New York.
The first time I had service it was with Cellular One (ATC) 403
customer when cellular first came out. Had the NEC bag phone (Still do
in the cellar) and that god awful bulky flips after that (Motorola)
and still have them in the cellar.
When I jumped to Bell Atlantic/Nynex or their first named service had
no contract. My phone was simply set to the "A" side from the "B"
side.

I purchased a plan many years later for 1 year to get the unlimited
nights and weekends but the phones and car kits have been mine all
along.
I have been on a month to month for many years, never had to pay any
ETF and Verizon has/had no choice in the matter. My equipment not
theirs, my invoices have never been late, had international calling
when others did not because of my credit and payment history etc.

So I hope that the Dr. is drinking at the same watering hole as
myself, or breathing the same air he would be great company! ha ha
