nowadays, as the LCD screens have progressed miles in the past couple of years, i would recommend an LCD screen (20-22"), great resolutions and most have amaizin picture quality and response times.

as for the lower res on CRT's and Higher on LCD, this is not always the case, going larger on the CRT could meen larger res, so it is now only down to size and quality of the pic.

If you are into games with a lot of fast movement, I would recommend at most a 2ms response time for an LCD. I think CRT's are still better for response times although LCDs are catching up.

How much do you want to pay for the LCD display. You would need a response time of 5ms or less, and look for high contrast ratios also. The blacks look like black not gray and the whites look brighter(more like pure white) with high contrast ratios. And samsung seem to be the best for gaming, and lg also. But I have had a really good experience with Hanns-g monitor and they are a good price for what you are getting. Samsung looks the clearest to me, some displays can look grainy and look as if their resolution is half of what it really is. When you look at the contrast ratio there are 2 different contrast ratios, one is dynamic contrast ratio and the other is just contrast ratio,

All of these monitors are best for $200-$300 dollar range that I can find.

sorry that I posted the same posts twice, I pressed the space button and it went back a page, and I clicked "submit your reply" again just in case the post was not sent but instead it got posted twice. Those links on top are the same but they do not have the mistake that I did with the other links in the other posts, I have alot of experience with monitors since my little cousins always break them twice a year.

You heard wrong...

My 19" CRT runs at 2048x1536

CRT resolutions vary wildly from model to model, cheap and nasty CRT's could well be lower resolution than LCD screens, some old CRT's had headache inducing refresh rates. you can probbaly look around and find cheap old CRT's that run at low resolutions but you could also look around and find old high end CRT's that are fantastic for gaming.

Most people are perfectly happy gaming on a modern 20" / 22" widescreen LCD, Personally I cant stand them for gaming, the narrow viewing angles, patchy brightness issues, poor colour and most importantly humungous physical pixels all make for poor gaming in my opinion. That said I love LCD's for extended desktop use, internet etc etc. In these scenarios harsh edges make for more comfortable reading etc... Just when gaming I see no point paying out for a high end graphics card and running AA when no ammount of AA is going to make up for the size of the pixels. Not everyones eyes are the same and not everyone is as demanding as I am... Millions of people are completely happy with LCD's for gaming.

On my CRT running at max resolution 2xaa is enough to make jaggies dissapear COMPLETELY to my eyes as close as 6" from the screen, my 20" samsung LCD with 2xaa I can make out the jaggies from over 24" away. A 22" LCD screen has even bigger pixels again...

I found LCDs really uncomfortable when dungeon diving and in dimly lit areas I had to sit completely still in one set position inorder to have total visibility over the whole screen.

Monitor choice is a personal preference thing though, if you are happy with a LCD screen its not the wrong choice!!

Im an IT manager for monitors at work I choose LCD's every time, at home my wife is perfectly happy gaming on an LCD screen she loves the samsung pebble ranges looks, even when switched off :D My daughter has a LCD because her room is quite small, I hunted down a old high end CRT on ebay when the last of my old high end CRT's died. I did try to live with a LCD monitor for gaming for 6 months but in the end couldnt hack it any more, as stylish as they may look, they just dont look as good in games as I want... But that is a personal thing, I am more likely to nitpick because I Know how good things CAN look!

Even back in the days when CRT's ruled the roost most CRT's were poor quality and I wouldnt chose them over a current gaming LCD screen!

a large, high-quality crt monitor is better for gaming, especially older games where you can lower the screen res without sacrificing picture quality. with an lcd monitor you are forced to play at the same resolution all the time if you want to keep picture quality. Unfortunately the crt monitors in question take up about 10 times as much space as an lcd monitor and put out enough heat to keep your room warm almost.
