Hey,

I know canterwood is supposed to support 533 fsb cpu's, but what kind of performance / memory bandwidth would you get by running this? Would that be crazy?

I'm thinking I want to build my box with a canterwood board and upgrade the CPU from 2.4b to 800 mHz fsb when the new cpu's aren't 600 bucks, but not if it's going to be a dog with a 533 fsb cpu in it. Showing my ignorance here.

I certainly don´t think that´s crazy. A Canterwood motherboard with good-quality DDR400 and a 533Mhz FSB should still beat i850E quite easily - I´m guessing here, but there´s very little that can go wrong. I think many people are planning on buying a Canterwood with the 3.06Ghz, which will become cheaper than the top 3.2Ghz HT (maybe in the range of $350-400 or something) and will sport "only" a 533Mhz FSB and HT technology. The upgrade path on this setup would then go all the way up to Prescott.

Then again, the i875 with dual DDR400 and an 800Mhz-FSB will be devastating... The +50% on FSB will make quite an impact. Way more, certainly, than going 333Mhz -> 400Mhz on the Barton core (which is only a 20% increase).

The i875 and the i865 both support 800Mhz FSB. The i875 is supposed to be a better performer because of its memory controller, which should give it a 3-5% boost or so, supposedly... Overall, I think you might expect something in the lines of 10-15% at most in terms of performance increase, for i875. I´d say 10% or so with Springdale... Not more, anyway.
