my computer exhibits very puzzling behaviour. during the boot up sequence all
proceeds well, then at the very end of the process, the screen changes its
wallpaper and themes from what i had set to the default screen. i have used
msconfig to clean boot and the change takes place after all .ini and startup
programs have loaded. what could be causing this to happen?
computer has windows xp (2002 edition) and sp2(up to date)

Is there any web content involved? Check in Display> Desktop> Customize
Desktop> Web. Items here will be layered over the basic wallpaper/desktop
selections. Uncheck items to stop them from loading. You can also delete
them from this screen if they are not wanted or needed.
