All my programs want to open in Note Pad

I am using Win. XP Home with SP-2. On Sat. 2/12/05 I did something really
stupid. In "My Computer" program files I tried to delete an EXE. file which
would not delete. For whatever reason I R clicked on it and selected "open
in notepad". The result was that most all of my programs want to open with
Note pad. When my PC starts I get 12 Note Pad windows with the program name
and Note Pad in the title bar. I got into System Restore Via Safe Mode and
restored to a week ago with no result. I also used "Last Good
Configuration" with no result. I ran SpyBot Search & Destroy in Safe mode.
Nothing showed up. I got into my A/V program (Trend PC Cillin) by opening
it in "MY COMPUTER" and found no virus. I also use a HOSTS file from the
MSMVP web site.

In Control Panel the only things that will open properly are

Adm. Tools, Folder options, Network Connections, Portable Media, Print,
Scanner, Scheduled tasks and Taskbar. This is an example of the gibberish
contained in the NOTE PAD file when I opened "Display":

I can get into event viewer and some of the error messages are as follows:

File replacement was attempted on the protected system file clipbrd.exe.
This file was restored to the original version to maintain system
stability. The file version of the system file is 5.1.2600.2180.

IPSec Services: IPSec Services failed to get the complete list of network
interfaces on the machine. This can be a potential security hazard to the
machine since some of the network interfaces may not get the protection as
desired by the applied IPSec filters. Please run IPSec monitor snap-in to
further diagnose the problem.

I have tried everything I can think of to no avail. I would really like
some help on this.

Thank you,

Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types and find the listing for EXE. It

Under File Types there is no listing for EXE. I checked it really close &
it is not there. I wonder if that is the problem?? I also tried the Reg.
script from Doug Knox and it did not work. When I opened the Zip file I
got a Note Pad window (I am not sure the script ran properly) and a window
asking if I wanted to make the Reg. change. I clicked yes and rebooted.
Problem is still there. I also checked the MS article but it involves
going into Regedit. I have never used Regedit and I get a note pad window
when I try to open it in Start-Run so can't get into it anyway.

Looks like I really have things messed up. Any more suggestions.

Thank you,
Bob Havens

Open Explorer, navigate to \windows, highlight an EXE file, right click,
select Open With..., select the option to Select the Program from a list,
when the list appears and, if Notepad is highlighted, uncheck the option to
always use this program, select Ok.

On the EXE files I only get a "run as" option. On all other files I get an
"open as" option. Is there a way around this?

Bob
