weakest component is the 9600GT by a long way, I'd have gotten a much cheaper hdd and upgraded that instead, should be ok for BF2 I ran it on a 7900GTO quite happily, and on a 6600GT in fact. you may have to manage your settings and expectations.

Would it be better if i got a 8800 GTX? What resolution should i run the 9600 on?

i'm running a 8800GTX at 1280x1024 (bf2 does not support widescreen properly) max out on quality and get good frames (E6600 processor).

or you could drop the raptor, get a 500GB hdd for programs and data and an ocz solid 30GB for the OS(its a tight squeeze but it'll fit) and then maybe get an 8800GT or a 9800GT with the spare cash, the 8800GT was quicker and cheaper than the 8800GTX when it came out.

The problem with that 500GB HD is that it is SLOW, those kind of HD's are designed for desktop work/storing stuff. In my other computer i had a 75GB raptor (standard) and it worked like a gem. With the 500GB you may get 5000 RPM, the fastest HD today is the VelociRaptor so I'm ok with my HD. So i'll try and play BF2 with a high resolution and see if it works ok.... :hello:

500GB's run at 7200rpm, nothing runs at 5000, 2.5" drives typically run at 5400 and because of the number of platters the larger 3.5" drives are nearly as fast as a std raptor.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/char [...] e,658.html - shows read speeds near as dammit equal to velociraptor for a 320 GB 7200.11

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/char [...] e,671.html shows seeks are slower, but for level loading etc. its typically not a random read.

Your money to throw away, and as you don't know some of basics about HDD speeds you will be throwing it away based on marketing speil.

BF2 won't put a dent in your system resources. It is an older game. Like 13thmonkey, I was running it pretty well with a 6800GT when it came out. On the NV website, I think the 6000 series is the recommended GPU.

For the resolution, it only goes up to 1280 or something to that nature in the game settings. You have to alter the shortcut settings to read as follows *edit: that is....to run over 1280

C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050

I purposely didn't mention this as I've never had it work, there is also the +widescreen flag with the same arguments, but also no go. Do you actually have this working?
