Patching Windows XP

While installing SP2 the system crashed and from there on I could not boot.
When I recovered XP from the recovery CD it insisted on installing Windows on
a new parttion (first of the D drive and on a second attempt on another
partition of the C drive). However I seem to have all the software previously
installed and hardware drivers still uncorrupt on the old Windows C
partition. How can I force it to try and patch the old partition of Windows?
If that is not possible how do I delete the whole system and start from
scratch...
