Hi Guys.
- WHAT'S YOUR MOST WEIRD PHENOMENON? -
Everyone knows here we have always, everyday, at least one issue (often even more...) to solve.
This can be an hardware related (multiple) issue, a software related (multiple) issue or even both at the same time (ouch).
note: a multiple issue is an issue which is due to a multiple factors/constraints linked together at the same time. eg a video capture which didnt work well because your cpu wasnt sufficiently powerful plus your hard disk was fragmented & too slow.
Then what is the most weird phenomenon you was been confronted to which has puzzled you
for a (long) while?
Have you succeeded to solve it?
How?
can you explain it now?
this can be funny but maybe also worthwhile however.
some comments/explanations about your mishap(s) are welcome.
note: if you have had more than one weird puzzle, go ahead & put them all.

if you know you don't know, the way could be more easy ...
Edited by Labdog on 05/14/02 01:02 PM.

My kg7 raid wont boot with 2 sticks of ram unless I run the ram voltage to 3.0, but then I could run the ram at 150 cl2 turbo.
Recently it started locking up so I pulled the 256 and now I can run at 150 cl2 ULTRA at 2.6 volts, weird.

PC PHENOMENON
Took a hdd out of a pc and put it into another pc, nada, wouldent boot, even when bios had detected it, put it back into the original pc, still wouldent boot, took it out, put it back into the 2nd pc again, booted up fine and worked great, but it still wont work in the original pc, Go figure
Other PHENOMENA
I used to live in a 100yr old house with my parents, one day I was in the kitchen doing the dishes, I looked around and My Grandad was standing beside me, My Grandad had been dead for 30 years, I was 16 at the time, I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, it scared the crap out of me
[weird]After many tweaks, and hard abuse on my latest system (non physical)
It is still running fast and in perfect shape. [/weird]
but there was one particular issue, which drove me crazy.
It started at work, a user calls in stating that every time he turns on his phone, his computer turns on, every time he hangs up, it turns off.
We did some research on the issue, suggested he unplugged it from UPS and/or contact the electrician to check the house wiring. I don’t know what happened after that.
But recently, I am walking in to my office (home) talking on my cordless phone - and the computer was on, well, I thought, maybe my wife had used it for something.
Finished my conversation hung the phone up, and the computer went dead...
at this time, I was not aware that the phone caused it, so went into some investigating...couldn't find anything.
Went out of the room, turned the phone on again, and I hear it post, and a beep.
Tried a different phone in the different room same results.
Remembering same issue at work, I have unplugged the phone chord from the ups, and ran it straight to the wall. No help.
Being really disappointed that I could not leave my modem plugged in all the time (the day before I have installed a phone plate just for it), I had to think of something.
Before this USR modem, I had some win modem, and it didn't have this problem, but I really liked my US Robotics modem.
So,
I have sliced the phone wire going from the modem into a wall, cut the two wires, installed a switch
, and at the end, all I had to do was push that little button, and I was connected.. More importantly pushing the button after I log off, or the phone will turn the computer off faster than I wanted to. It was better, but still annoying.
Few days ago,
Doing some changes in the bios, I ran across- wake up lan option, it was enabled, so I disabled it (hoping it would work for the modem)...ever since it was working fine.
Cutting the computer on, I can understand, but turning it off ??? it must be a feature.
And I only had this problem both at home and at work with an USR modem, other modems were fine.
So I have a useless pretty little switch that is attached to my computer,
but it serves it purpose- people die of curiosity trying to figure out what it is.
my 2 rubles.
That is interesting... maybe that is the reason why I got problems running my PC2400 RAM at 150 MHz, or even on 140 MHz (after some days it wouldn't boot anymore). I will try of increasing that voltage helps... I have RAMsinks so heat will not be such a problem.
With a hovering case crashing takes a whole new meaning...
.
I will name some:
1. One day suddenly almost all of my MP3 where gone on my 6GB old HD, and I couldn't get them back properly (runned scandisk and Norton Disk Doctor) so I fast made a back up from some other important files and rebooted the system.
But it wouldn't get pass my HD search check from my onboard RAID controller, so I plugged out my 6GB drive and all ran fine.
Some weeks after this I plugged it in again and... it worked perfect again (besides from my missing MP3s, but I backed almost all of them up before I losed them).
2. I use to have a drive on My Comnputer that didn't excist... nothing could remove it till it disappeared someday when I reconnected all my HD after a case redecorate.
3. Today my KG7-RAID refused to boot properly running on 140 MHz FSB... but it ran rock stable two days before that. But maybe Matisaro has given the answer to that problem.

yes it is.

your comp has a cpu, a fsb & a memory bus overclocked, isnt it?
your 2 sticks of memory are "high quality" overclockable memory, isnt it?
i dont know exactly your memory brand (micron, corsair, mushkin, kingmax, other...) but maybe you have had this issue due to your memory brand or a faulty product?!?
maybe it can be due to a lack of power? your psu is it enough for your rig?
| Quote : Recently it started locking up |
how many time did you use those sticks overclocked?
was it round 1 month or 2, whatsoever something like a range of months?
| Quote : so I pulled the 256 and now I can run at 150 cl2 ULTRA at 2.6 volts. |
i guess here you have two 256MB capacity sticks?
did you pull out the memory stick which was plugged in the first memory slot to solve the "locking up" issue?
reminder: questions, hypothesis, debates without hidden traps.

if you know you don't know, the way could be more easy ...
here is mine among other puzzles.
- PART ONE: PRIMARY DESCRIPTION -
when i reboot my system, this takes around 14 minutes.
after i log on with my user/password,
my system stays around 10 minutes as it was freezed (no ide access, no scsi access, no display changes, no sound). i can see just the xp desktop without any movement.
i have done a test which has fixed the error but the issue remains to be annoying.
when i close my unique explorer window pointing to "C:" before rebooting (i have no application nor task else but just this one) & i reboot my pc, i have again a standard normal boot time around 1-2 minute (instead of 14 minutes before) without any delay.
there is no explorer window this time and because of that the issue didnt appear again.
simply closing the UNIQUE explorer window before the reboot solves my problem.
but of course i cant close all explorer windows before each time i close or reboot the system. its rather annoying.
plus that i can say about my issue when the OS is booting it is that there is also no disk access nor whatsover til 10 or 12 minutes then after this period the OS boot normally and takes around 2 minutes more.
but i repeat simply closing the window before solves this strange affection.
- PART TWO: SOFTWARES & HARDWARES PRECISIONS -
im on ntfs file system under winXP Pro OS.
i have 2 40 GB hard disks full. (around 5GB space free on each)
i used to utilize my comp for capturing.
im not connected to a LAN (sometimes this can involves network timeout when booting). its a stand alone station.
i have already:
- disable xp services
- defrag each disk with microsoft defrag and VoptXP
- scanned both disks with PC-Cillin antivirus with latest software updates & latest virus definitions. no virus were found even in my local emails (outlook messaging tool). i have not evil background programs/applications like trojan horse virus, adsware, spywares or whatsoever.
- i have even used the Boot Visualization program from microsoft to trace all along my win xp boot. it told me simply that i have after my login, an awaiting time of 10 minutes where everything went standby.
after the boot, everything is alright and works fine.
hardwares work fine as well. (i have tested them)
i havent touched anything from my softwares (apps, drivers). i havent installed/uninstalled anything. moreover, i havent installed/uninstalled any hardware.
however, i think its a software issue related to the huge used capacity which is up to 70GB in 2 hard disks.
im wondering if is there a problem with the ntfs file system on huge data capacity?
i havent never had before this kind of slowness til my both hard disks passed the average capacity which is 20GB for each disk.
i was completely puzzling about this strange behaviour ?!?
- PART THREE: RESOLUTION -
well, after 3 days, i have found the issue.
my first disk, the primary one which contains the XP OS, had 3.4 GB free space when this issue appeared.
but the main OS change that i had noticed was the huge increase of space i had used till now. (i have never had this problem before but my harddisk was generally not used above the half of his capacity ie 20GB).
then i simply purge a little my harddisk to have 10GB free on it.
after this manipulation, the reboot remains as before under 2 minutes instead of 14 minutes.
moreover, i retried this test but as the opposite, to my second harddisk (also a 40GB capacity disk).
i filled it to obtain just a 5.8GB free space & that has been exactly the same issue which reappeared with this second hard disk which is even not the primary disk (with the xp OS) but a secondary one.
NOTE
besides, i would like to point out that this issue is not dependant of xp services, boot starting programs, backgound tasks, virus, trojan horse virus nor malicious ad-wares or whatsoever.
it is just an issue between harddisks, the Microsoft Explorer multithread application (Explorer.exe)& the NTFS file system of Windows XP.
moreover, everyone knows that this files management is totally integrated & it has become an entire part of the winXP OS.
CONCLUSION
then it seems to be that the Microsoft WinXP NTFS can bug for at least reather high capacity hard disks & quite heavy configurations.

Im running a Maxtor D740X 80Gb drive in win2k using NTFS, as one 80gb partition, absolutely no problems with it so far. XP may be a shade different, but i kinda doubt it.

yes it is.
sorry, you cant compare this 2 operating systems face of my 3 days tests on win XP researching & correcting my issue.
reminder: the win2K kernel is different of the winXP kernel.
even more with the windows explorer (explorer.exe) which is tightly integrated in windows XP & moreover integrates also internet explorer 6.0 features.

They wouldnt run at 133 at stock voltage let alone 150.
But yes, both are corsair cl2 pc2100.
| Quote : i dont know exactly your memory brand (micron, corsair, mushkin, kingmax, other...) but maybe you have had this issue due to your memory brand or a faulty product?!?
|
Both memory modules run fine alone, but together they dont work, both are corsair, one is 512 the other 256.
I have a 350 enermax, power is not the issue.
| Quote : how many time did you use those sticks overclocked?
|
About 2 months at 3volts, then it stopped overcoming whatever difficulty the 2 different sticks were having, going just to the 512 resolved all issues.
| Quote : guess here you have two 256MB capacity sticks?
|
I have 1 512 and 1 256, the slot was not the problem.

that i would like to point out is:
1° if you had plugged the 256MB stick on the first memory slot it had worked most than the 512MB stick plugged to the second memory slot. that could involved that this stick come out to damage first.
because the memory stick in slot 1 is used first by the OS until the system reachs its capacity & then uses the second memory stick plugged in the second memory slot.
i have had already this exp with 2 low quality 256MB memory sticks plugged to my mb slot1 & slot2. the slot1 memory stick has been damage after 2 weeks. i have ejected it & moved my second stick from slot2 to slot1 & my comp has worked again 2 weeks before this second stick died as well.
2° maybe to mix different capacity memory sticks could involve some weird issues?!?
3° have you tried to reverse the location of those 2 sticks?
4° maybe you have generate some damage to increase the voltage to 3 volts plus OCing them?
5° i dont know exactly your rig but maybe your comp has had a memory overheating those last days?
6° besides, are they XMS corsair type?
but yes, anyway, its a weird phenomenon.
btw, i would like to buy corsair memory but now im puzzling about.

Well when he farted before his PC the temps suddenly dropped... strange isn't it.
With a hovering case crashing takes a whole new meaning...
.
The weirdest phenominon that I've ever seen was once when my supervisor's PC just refused to boot one day. It kept giving this error message 'general failure reading hard drive' each time he would try to boot up.
I swear, he tried working on that PC for a good three hours straight. No matter what he did, it just wouldn't fix his hard drive. It was so freaky.
So then he finally leaves to go get someone from helpdesk to look at his PC because he's given up. So I removed the 'special' bootable floppy (which besides the boot files only contained a little C program I had written in about a minute and a modivied autoexec.bat to run that file on startup) before the helpdesk people got there.
Then I put it back into my drawer to save for a day when I needed another good laugh.
It was almost as fun as the time I helped one of the helpdesk people set up his PC to run by remote while he was at lunch. We had a good laugh when he got back. ...Safely from the helpdesk office of course.

& i think that his pc dropped also.

I've had problems myself with mixing different capacity sticks. My last comp would run fine with either the 64MB stick OR the 128MB stick. But it would hang at boot with both of them in (in any configuration).
Weird Phenomena:
My g/f's Dell develops a strange hdd problem over time. The hdd screws into a PLASTIC frame. After a while the computer 'loses' the OS. However, if you simply unscrew the hdd and lay it somewhere (still plugged in) it will work just fine---for a while longer, then it dies completely. The REALLY strange part about all this is that I can then take that "dead" hdd, plug it into my own homebrew box, and it will work flawlessly. So she gets a brand new hdd from Dell every 6 months or so to keep her computer happy.
