I want to build a canterwood system with dual ddr and HT and need advice on the best board to do this components will include 2 80 GB maxtor drives (possible a 3rd and 4th 40gb also), a cdrom and cdrwand an ATI 9700 pro retail, and the appropriate cpu for hyperthreading at 800mhz ( also need a rec on 512 dual ddr @ 400 but assume corsair is my best option) As I don't want to buy an sata drive at this time sata raid is not a consideration but raid0 ide might be. I plan on continuing to use win98se even though I do own xp-pro and use it on a secondary machine ( I like 98 for gaming)

hey lagger, you're in a similar position as me ...

here's my thread on this and some of the comments and info given -- you'll see some memory recs down at the end from Prof and Shadus.

http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=540991#540991

as for the MOBO rec -- I was going to go with MSI but Crash mentioned having some probs. So, some of the guys here are looking at the ASUS and ABIT. You can read more on that here too...

http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=540382#540382

Here's some review links posted by PROF...

And, this is a good one on 875P too...

So, I don' t think there is a clear picture yet - at least in my mind and I am a newbie and don't know really which brands to trust yet; however, people seem to like the ASUS a lot ... I am either going the ASUS or ABIT route at this point but that can change fairly quickly!!!!

hth. would try to just provide an html link but I don't know how to do the markup deal as that faq link is broken and it says html is disabled - <b>is it?</b>

At the top of your post screen, there's a line that says

hey traqr -- yes, I did *try* that ... as it gives me a 404 error ...
I might do this wrong so I hope the link turns out right -- I'll figure it out... But, here's what I get --

"Fill out the form below to post a message on the forum. HTML is disabled. Markup is enabled, so you may use <A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=faq" target="_new"> markup in your posts </A>. "

So, your link that you posted works fine -- maybe my profile needs to be updated or something and I need to specify English b/c I see that in your url. But, I did try to figure it out before posting ...

thanks for the good url though -- this helps big-time!

i haven't heard that ... and I hope not. I just made my decision and bought my mobo (the Abit IC7-G Max2) and a Radeon 9800 Pro yesterday....

I heard about a problem that was fixed by changing a BIOS setting for AGP access from UC to USWC. I think it might have been the Asus board, but with the fix that easy, I never paid much attention.
