The Pavilion 6501 is new enough that the BIOS ought to accept a 40GB drive. The
motherboard has an Intel 810 chipset, and a BIOS usually associated with a
chipset and computer of this vintage generally works OK with a 40GB drive. But,
frankly, I do not know for sure.

As a hedge, you can install a 30GB drive, because 30GB is just below the 32GB
threshold, one of the many fairly idiotic BIOS limitations built in by BIOS
designers thinking of only the short term.

The other possibility would be to get an inexpensive hard disk controller card
(Promise or SIIG are the most commonly sold brands), in the event that the
motherboard BIOS refuses to handle the 40GB drive.

Motherboard BIOSes have had all manner of hard drive capacity limits built in:
528MB, 2.1GB, 8.4GB, 32GB, 132GB are the most common, depending on the age of a
motherboard going back to 386 days... Ben Myers

Thanks for your reply Ben...
I emailed HP support who also advised that I should be able to install a
40GB HD, so I'll give it a go...and I'd just like to add that they replied
within an hour or two and I thought they'd take days...I'm impressed!
Regards
Kerry
