Hello,

I want to create a free wireless node for my neighborhood.

I currently have a wireless home network using a SMC 2804WBRP-G
(wireless router).

I purchased a separate access point (belkin 802.11G)and have a SMC
7008ABR router.

How do I configure the Belkin AP so that it cannot access my home
network but have access to the internet?

Any help appreciated.

You might wanna read your TOS (terms of service) to see if you're ISP
will get irate.

There were several discussion on exactly this topic a while back. The
problem was similar. Coffee shop with a public wireless LAN and a
private wired LAN, both with access to the internet, but not to each
other. Several solutions were offered.

Do you want to provide free (as in free beer) on anonymous Internet access?
If you do not want spammers or other hooligans to misuse your network you
should consider some mechanism for authentication.

I do not know about the situation in the US, but in Finland the
telecommunications law is quite clear on this issue: The ISP may prohibit
the _resale_ of the connecton but cannot limit the _sharing_ of the
Internet connection. Free access points are thus always allowed. I believe
similar laws are in effect or coming into effect in other parts of the EU.

In previous posts you advocted the use of FREESCO.
http://www.freesco.org/
and PublicIP

An alternative to consider is m0n0wall:
http://www.m0n0.ch/wall/

This is a FreeBSD based firewall with a captive portal and a Radius client
for wireless access. The distribution also contains a traffic shaper.
